Application Scenarios

1. Main Panel Knockouts for Cable Glands

Material: 2 mm mild steel panel (powder-coated)

Recommended: HSS step drills and annular cutters, 20-63 mm to suit PG/metric gland thread sizes

Notes: Mark hole centres with a centre punch to prevent wandering. Apply cutting paste before starting. Run at controlled low speed and let the tool do the work without forcing. After cutting, deburr the hole with a round file or countersink before threading the gland. For IP-rated enclosures, hole tolerance is critical to maintaining the seal.

2. Step Drilling Conduit Entries in Sheet Metal

Material: 0.8-1.5 mm galvanised sheet steel

Recommended: HSS step drill bit, 4-32 mm

Notes: Step drills eliminate the need for pilot holes and produce clean, burr-free openings in one pass. For M20 cable glands (20.4 mm thread OD), step to the 20 mm mark. For M25 glands, step to 25 mm. Use moderate speed (300-500 RPM) and light downward pressure. One step drill replaces a full set of individual twist drills for gland work.

3. MCC Panel Busbar Window Cutouts

Material: 2-3 mm steel panel partitions

Recommended: HSS step drills and annular cutters (corner relief holes) + jigsaw or nibbler for straight runs

Notes: For rectangular busbar windows, drill relief holes at each corner with a 16-20 mm step drill or suitable cutter, then connect with a jigsaw. This prevents corner cracking and gives a cleaner finish than trying to cut the rectangle in one pass. File edges smooth to prevent conductor insulation damage.

Selection Tips

  1. Match gland size to hole saw: PG11 = 18.6 mm hole, PG16 = 22.5 mm, PG21 = 28.3 mm, PG29 = 37 mm, PG36 = 47 mm, PG48 = 59 mm. Always check the gland datasheet for thread pilot hole diameter.
  2. Material determines tool: Mild steel under 2 mm = HSS step drill for speed. Larger panel cutouts = annular cutter or chassis punch where the setup supports it. Plastic enclosures = current plastic-rated hole tooling at higher RPM.
  3. Always use cutting fluid on steel: Paste for mild steel, liquid oil for stainless and thick plates. Dry cutting voids any warranty claims on tooth wear.
  4. Deburr every hole: Sharp edges damage cable insulation, compromise IP ratings, and create safety hazards during wiring.
