Application Focus

Structural steel fabrication depends on accurately drilled bolt holes in H-beams, I-beams, channels, and angles. Connection integrity requires holes within tight tolerances per EN 1090 or AISC standards -- an undersized hole prevents bolt insertion, an oversized hole compromises joint strength. For holes above 13 mm, taper shank drills (Morse Taper MT1-MT5) are the standard tool, used in radial drill presses and magnetic drills. Application Scenarios

1. Beam-to-Column End Plate Connections

Material: S355 structural steel, flange thickness 12-25 mm

Bolt size: M20 and M24 (requiring 22 mm and 26 mm holes per EN 1090)

Recommended: HSS taper shank drill bit 22 mm (MT2) and 26 mm (MT3), M2 HSS

Notes: Set up the steel section on the radial drill press bed or on trestles under the radial arm. Mark hole centers from the connection drawing. Center-punch each location. Drill at 250-350 RPM with cutting fluid. For flanges over 20 mm thick, a pilot hole (10-12 mm) reduces cutting forces and improves hole accuracy. Check the first few holes with a bolt gauge to confirm diameter tolerance before running the full batch.

2. Field Drilling with Magnetic Drill on Erected Steel

Material: Erected steel beams and columns, S275/S355, 10-30 mm thick

Bolt size: M16 to M24 (18 mm to 26 mm holes)

Recommended: HSS taper shank drill 18-26 mm in magnetic drill with MT2 or MT3 arbor

Notes: Clean the steel surface where the magnet will sit -- remove paint, scale, and debris. Clamp the magnetic drill firmly and engage the magnet. For vertical or overhead drilling, use a safety strap. Start with moderate RPM and consistent feed. Apply cutting fluid generously. On weathering steel (Corten), upgrade to M35 cobalt as the higher alloy content accelerates HSS wear.

3. Angle and Channel Connection Holes

Material: Angles (L-sections) and channels (C/U-sections), S235/S275, 6-15 mm thick

Bolt size: M12 to M16 (13 mm to 18 mm holes)

Recommended: HSS taper shank drill 13-18 mm (MT1 or MT2); HSS straight shank 13 mm also acceptable for M12

Notes: Light sections can flex under drilling pressure. Clamp the workpiece firmly to the drill press table or use a magnetic drill base clamped to the flange. For angles, drill through the flat face with the workpiece supported behind. The inside radius of rolled angles can cause the drill to walk -- always center-punch and consider a pilot hole. Keep RPM higher for thinner sections (400-600 RPM for 6-10 mm thick) to maintain chip flow.

Selection Tips

  1. Match the Morse Taper to your machine spindle: MT1 fits drills up to 14 mm, MT2 fits 14.25-23 mm, MT3 fits 23.25-31.75 mm, MT4 fits 32-50.5 mm, MT5 fits 51-76 mm. Use a taper sleeve adapter if the drill taper is smaller than the spindle taper.
  2. Steel grade determines HSS grade: Standard M2 HSS for S235, S275, and S355. M35 cobalt for S460 and weathering steel. M42 cobalt for S690 and quenched-and-tempered grades.
  3. Pilot drilling for heavy flanges: For flanges over 20 mm thick and bolt holes above 22 mm, drilling a 10-12 mm pilot hole first reduces cutting forces, improves hole roundness, and extends the life of the larger taper shank drill.
