Facade & Curtain Wall Anchor Fixing Solutions
Application Overview
Curtain wall and facade installation depends entirely on the quality of anchor holes drilled into concrete substrates. Every bracket, stone cladding fixing, and ventilated facade rail is held by anchors whose performance starts with a clean, straight, correctly-sized hole. Poor drilling causes anchor slip, cracked concrete edges, and structural failure under wind load. Zhonghuan supplies the SDS-Plus, SDS-Max, and diamond core drill bits that facade contractors and fixing suppliers need, factory-direct with OEM flexibility.
Recommended Products
| Product | Size Range | Facade Application |
|---|---|---|
| SDS-Plus Hammer Drill Bits | 8-16 mm x 160-600 mm | Standard expansion anchors, chemical anchor holes, bracket fixings |
| SDS-Max Hammer Drill Bits | 12-25 mm x 340-920 mm | Deep embedment anchors for heavy curtain wall systems and stone cladding |
| Diamond Core Drills | 25-80 mm | Undercut anchor holes, precise cylindrical holes for special anchor systems |
Application Scenarios
1. Curtain Wall Bracket Anchoring to Concrete Slab Edge
Material: Reinforced concrete slab edge, C30-C50, 200-300 mm thick
Recommended: SDS-Plus 2-cutter, 12-16 mm x 200-300 mm
Notes: Drill perpendicular to the slab edge. Minimum edge distance is typically 2x anchor diameter for expansion anchors, 1.5x for chemical anchors (confirm with ETA datasheet). Blow out dust with a hand pump and brush before inserting anchors -- residual dust reduces chemical anchor bond strength by up to 50%. For overhead soffit fixings, use dust extraction to protect eyes and lungs.
2. Stone Cladding Fixings in Facade Concrete
Material: In-situ or precast concrete facade panel, C30-C40
Recommended: SDS-Plus, 10-12 mm x 160-200 mm for standard embedment
Notes: Stone cladding fixings carry the weight of individual stone panels (often 30-80 kg each). Hole spacing and edge distances must follow the facade engineer's drawing exactly. For precast concrete panels, verify the concrete strength and reinforcement layout before drilling -- precast panels often have dense rebar close to the surface. Reduced hammer energy prevents spalling on thin precast panels.
3. Deep Anchors for Ventilated Facade Rails
Material: Concrete or masonry wall, 150-400 mm thick
Recommended: SDS-Max, 16-20 mm x 400-600 mm for deep chemical anchors
Notes: Ventilated facade systems transfer wind suction loads through rail brackets into deep chemical anchors. In high-wind zones, embedment depths of 100-150 mm require long SDS-Max bits. Drill depth must be controlled precisely -- over-drilling wastes resin, under-drilling reduces pull-out capacity. Use a depth stop or mark the bit with tape at the target depth plus 10 mm for dust clearance at the hole base.
Selection Tips
- Match bit diameter to anchor specification: The anchor manufacturer's datasheet specifies the exact drill hole diameter. Typical: M8 anchor = 8 mm hole, M10 = 10 mm, M12 = 12 mm, M16 = 16 mm. Chemical anchors sometimes require 2 mm oversize.
- Calculate total drill depth: Embedment depth + bracket thickness + washer + 10 mm dust clearance. Select a bit length that exceeds this total by at least 30 mm.
- SDS-Plus vs SDS-Max: For holes up to 16 mm and 300 mm deep, SDS-Plus is sufficient. For larger diameters or deeper holes, SDS-Max delivers faster drilling with less operator fatigue.
- Hole cleaning is critical: Blow out 3 times with a hand pump, brush 3 times with a round wire brush, blow out again. This is not optional for structural anchors.
