Private Label vs Brand Reselling — The Channel Choice
Distributors and importers building a diamond core bit catalogue choose between two channel models. Reselling premium brand product (Hilti, Husqvarna, Milwaukee) gives access to brand-name pull-through but caps margin at the distributor discount tier — typically 25–40% off MSRP, with the brand owning the customer relationship. Running a private-label program with an OEM factory gives 30–60% better gross margin and direct customer relationship, in exchange for taking responsibility for the spec, packaging, and channel marketing.
Private label is the right model when annual volume justifies a documented program (typically 500+ pieces per size per year across the major diameters), the distributor has channel marketing capability, and the buyer wants brand identity over white-label reselling. Brand reselling is the right model for low-volume single-project buyers and for channels where end-users specifically require brand-name tooling.
Zhonghuan Private-Label Program Structure
| Stage | Deliverable |
|---|---|
| 1. Benchmark selection | Buyer specifies target brand reference (Hilti SP-H, Milwaukee Diamond Ultra, Husqvarna ELITE-DRILL, Bosch GDB) and target market |
| 2. Spec lock | Engineering spec sheet against benchmark — segment, bond, tube, weld, thread, connection |
| 3. Sample drilling test | Witness test in target substrate with documented hole count, wear rate, joint integrity |
| 4. Packaging proof | Printed sample of color box, blister card, or label before bulk production |
| 5. First production lot | Mill certificate, water flow test, destructive cross-section, packaging confirmation |
| 6. Repeat orders | Same locked spec; per-lot QC documentation continues |
Packaging Formats
| Format | Best Channel | Cost vs White Box |
|---|---|---|
| White box | Industrial wholesale, B2B trade | Baseline |
| Color box (printed) | Trade counter, distributor catalogue | +15–25% |
| Blister card | Hardware retail, big box | +10–20% |
| Plastic tube | Small-diameter retail, premium positioning | +5–15% |
| Industrial bulk pack | Distributor stocking, trade resale | +10–15% |
Marking Options
- Laser etched — logo and specification etched directly into the tube body. Permanent, durable, suitable for premium positioning. Higher per-piece cost, longer setup time on first order.
- Printed label — adhesive label on the tube body with logo and specification. Lower cost, faster turnaround, suitable for industrial and retail bulk programs.
- Pad printed — direct ink printing on the tube body. Mid-cost, durable enough for industrial use, faster than laser for high-volume runs.
- Sticker on cap — small printed sticker on the top cap. Lowest cost option, suitable for white-box and value-tier programs.
Recommended Private-Label Program Sequence
- Lock the benchmark. Hilti SP-H for European structural rebar. Milwaukee Diamond Ultra for US cordless retrofit. Husqvarna ELITE-DRILL for cross-region stand-mounted. Bosch GDB for EU mid-tier. The benchmark determines the spec.
- Start with backbone diameters. 1¼-7 UNC, Ø52, 82, 102, 132, 152 mm covers the volume diameters for wet structural coring. Add specialty diameters in year 2 based on channel feedback.
- Two SKU lines, not one. Wet line for the structural channel (1¼-7 UNC) + handheld line for MEP installers (5/8-11 UNC). Single-line catalogues underperform.
- Document the spec lock. Same spec on repeat orders means consistent field performance, easier QC, and no in-flight substitution risk. Specs that drift batch to batch produce field complaints.
- Plan packaging once, not per order. Approve color box artwork once, lock the printing template, and reuse across diameters. Per-order packaging design adds lead time and cost.
RFQ Checklist
- Target market and channel positioning
- Annual volume per diameter (first year + projected year 2–3)
- Benchmark brand reference (Hilti, Husqvarna, Milwaukee, Bosch)
- Engineering target — segment, bond, tube, weld, thread
- Connection (1¼-7 UNC + 5/8-11 UNC backbone)
- Substrate (concrete strength class, rebar density)
- Cordless or corded — specify cordless-tuned bond if needed
- Marking format (laser etch, printed label, pad print, sticker)
- Packaging (white box, color box, blister, tube, bulk pack)
- Custom artwork requirements (logo files, color references, language versions)
- Documentation requirements (mill cert, water flow test, destructive cross-section, witness drilling)
- Sample order quantity and lead time
Trust Signals
- Spec lock against named brand reference — Hilti SP-H, Milwaukee Diamond Ultra, Husqvarna ELITE-DRILL, Bosch GDB
- Engineering documentation per production lot — mill certificate, water flow test, destructive cross-section, witness drilling test
- Packaging proof before bulk production — printed sample of color box or blister card
- MOQ from 200 pieces per size on standard ranges with standard packaging
- Repeat-order consistency — same locked spec, same QC documentation, no in-flight substitution
