Four shank families × three pin counts = 12 core SKU combinations covering virtually every concrete and stone surface preparation channel. All four shank families are manufactured in-house at our Zhejiang facility — bush hammers are part of our core production, not a sourced accessory.

Pin Count and Texture Outcome

Pin count drives both removal rate and texture fineness. The choice depends on the downstream application, not the substrate type:

  • 16-pin (coarse). Fastest material removal, deepest texture. Used for concrete roughening before resurfacing, shotcrete bonding prep, and pre-overlay surface preparation. Pin spacing is widest; impact force per pin is highest.
  • 25-pin (medium). Balanced removal rate and finish quality. The workhorse grade for general surface preparation, light decorative work, and anti-slip texturing on industrial floors. Pin spacing and impact distribute more evenly.
  • 36-pin (fine). Slower removal, finest texture grade. Applied on architectural stone, decorative concrete surfaces, ramps, walkways, and any work where the final aesthetic matters. Often the preferred grade for stone-finishing contractors and architectural specifiers.

For mixed-channel programs, the typical SKU velocity is 25-pin > 16-pin > 36-pin. For dedicated stone-finishing channels, the order reverses to 36 > 25 > 16.

Solid-Pin vs Hollow-Pin Carbide

Carbide-pin bush hammer head, solid-pin construction

The carbide pin head is the wear part. Two construction options:

  • Solid-pin carbide. The standard configuration. Higher impact resistance, longer service life under sustained heavy concrete work. Slightly heavier overall tool weight. Recommended for 16-pin coarse bush hammers and any application involving rebar contact or hard aggregate concrete.
  • Hollow-pin carbide. Lighter weight, often paired with finer pin counts (25 / 36). Preferred for decorative stone finishing where total tool weight affects operator fatigue over long shifts. Slightly faster wear on hard aggregate but excellent on softer stone and standard concrete.

Both pin types are induction-brazed to the steel body for stable retention under sustained impact and repeat professional surface-preparation work.

Steel Body and Heat Treatment

The steel body absorbs the impact transferred from the breaker piston and transmits it to the pin face. Body construction:

  • Substrate: 40Cr or 42CrMo forged steel. 40Cr is standard for general construction work; 42CrMo is upgraded for heavy demolition and large-format bush hammers.
  • CNC-forged body, induction-hardened striking face. The pin-mounting face is induction-hardened to retain pin integrity under repeated impact.
  • Shank machined to brand-compatible tolerances. SDS-Max shank per approved drawing and fit gauge; hex / square / round shank per common breaker chuck profiles.
  • Surface finish: phosphated or black-oxide as standard, with optional bright finish or color-coded body for premium retail positioning.

Where Bush Hammers Get Used

Five primary buyer-application combinations:

  1. Concrete contractors — overlay prep. Roughening old concrete before pouring a new overlay, self-leveling compound, or epoxy floor system. 16-pin coarse, SDS Max or hex shank dominant.
  2. Shotcrete contractors — bonding prep. Roughening the substrate before spraying shotcrete or gunite. 16 / 25 pin, SDS Max common.
  3. Anti-slip flooring installers. Creating textured surface on ramps, walkways, parking decks, industrial floors. 25 / 36 pin, hex or SDS Max.
  4. Stone-finishing contractors. Decorative finish on architectural stone, granite, marble — bush-hammered texture on facades, columns, paving stones. 36-pin fine, often hex or square shank.
  5. Demolition and renovation rental fleets. Mixed-use bush hammers for occasional surface prep. All three pin counts on SDS Max + hex shank typical.

Packaging Conventions

  • Single-piece blister. Cardboard backer + clear PET front. EAN-13 barcode, brand artwork, shank type and pin count called out prominently. Common for hardware retail.
  • Plastic tube. Stackable, hangable. Common for trade counter sets (e.g. 3-pin-count assortment in one tube).
  • Bulk industrial pack. Polybag + header card. 10–25 piece outer. For electrical contractor supply and rental fleet.
  • Branded contractor case. Plastic case with foam insert, 6–9 mixed shank/pin combinations. A less common format at OEM but achievable for committed programs.
  • Multi-language labelling. English standard; German, French, Russian, Spanish artwork supported for region-specific private-label runs.

Inspection Protocol

  1. Pin count and pin geometry. Visual + dimensional check — pin count matches spec, pin tip projection within tolerance, pin face flatness within drawing.
  2. Pin-to-body brazing integrity. Sample destructive test (1–2 pieces per 500) — pin must fail before braze joint fails.
  3. Shank dimensions. Per the approved SDS-Max shank drawing and matching gauge or per breaker chuck spec (hex / square / round). Shank gauge verification per batch.
  4. Body hardness. Induction-hardened striking face per drawing, 50–55 HRC typical.
  5. Concentricity / runout. Critical for SDS Max bush hammers — ≤ 0.3 mm at striking face when shank is held in SDS chuck.
  6. Drop test. Bit dropped from 1 m onto concrete — no pin loss, no braze failure.
  7. Service-life sample. 5 pieces per lot tested on C20/25 concrete to specified strike count; pin wear measured.

Brand Benchmark Context

The international reference products that procurement buyers typically benchmark against:

  • Hilti TE-Y BT series — SDS Max bush hammer, premium retail.
  • Bosch HSM series — SDS Max bush hammer, retail and trade.
  • Makita bush hammer accessories — SDS Max, contractor supply.
  • DeWalt bush hammer accessories — SDS Max, trade counter.
  • Trelawny / Von Arx — European specialist brands for surface preparation tools.

Zhonghuan produces equivalent specification at OEM tier for private-label buyers competing in these channels. Our bush hammer manufacturing line is one of our core capability areas — body forging, carbide pin brazing, induction hardening, and finishing are all in-house.
