Getting the Most From a Hammer Chisel
A chisel cuts on impact, not pressure — these fundamentals decide tip life, speed and operator safety.
Match the chisel to the task
Point chisels break and groove concrete, flat chisels lift tile, render and screed, scaling chisels strip coatings and weld spatter. Using a point where a flat belongs wastes energy and chews the surface.
Tip · Break with a point first, then switch to a flat to clean up.
Let the hammer do the work
A chisel cuts on the hammer's impact energy, not your body weight. Leaning hard stalls the piston, overheats the tip and rounds the edge — guide the tool and let it pulse.
Tip · If the hammer bogs down, you're pushing, not chiselling — ease off.
Work at a low angle
Start a flat chisel at about 20–30° to peel material off the surface in layers. Too steep and it buries and stalls; too flat and it skates across the top.
Tip · Drop the angle once the edge bites and let it run just under the surface.
Dress the tip before it mushrooms
A mushroomed struck end can spall dangerously and a rounded edge transmits far less energy. Re-grind the cutting edge and dress the struck end, cooling often to protect the temper.
Tip · Never let the grinder blue the tip — blue heat softens the hardened edge.
Keep the shank clean and greased
Grit packed into an SDS shank wears the hammer chuck and steals impact energy. Wipe the shank and apply a thin film of hammer grease before fitting the chisel.
Tip · A dry, dirty shank is the number-one cause of premature chuck wear.
Tip hard, body tough
The induction-hardened 40Cr tip (HRC 50–55) holds the cutting edge; the softer body (HRC 35–40) absorbs shock so the chisel bends under abuse instead of snapping.
Tip · A chisel that snaps clean was over-hardened in the body — ours are tempered to bend first.

What is the difference between a point chisel and a flat chisel?
A point chisel concentrates all the impact on a single point to break and crack concrete — it is the demolition workhorse. A flat, wide or scaling chisel spreads the impact across an edge to lift tile, render, screed and coatings cleanly. Most jobs start with a point to break the material, then a flat to dress the surface.
Can hammer chisels be re-sharpened, and which hammers do they fit?
Yes — the cutting edge can be re-ground several times; grind lightly and keep the tip cool to protect the hardened temper. Our chisels are made in SDS-Plus, SDS-Max, Hex 19mm and Hex 22/28mm shanks, fitting Bosch, Makita, Hilti, DeWalt, Milwaukee and other major demolition hammers.
