Steam Tempered Is a Finish, Not the Whole Specification

Many taper shank drill buyers ask for steam tempered HSS drills because the premium catalogues they know use a dark industrial finish on general-purpose HSS taper drills. That is a valid visual and functional preference, but it should not be the only line in the RFQ.

A correct quotation separates four fields: the HSS grade, the DIN and Morse taper standard, the point geometry, and the surface finish. If a supplier only sees steam tempered, they can quote many different products under the same color.

  • M2 DIN 345 steam tempered: the volume line for general steel, machine shops, and MRO distribution.
  • M35 DIN 345 steam tempered or amber: the premium line for stainless and high-tensile steel buyers.
  • DIN 1870 steam tempered: extra length line for deeper reach, quoted after diameter and application review.

Buyer Risks to Control

  1. Color-only quoting: two suppliers can quote identical dark finish but different HSS grade.
  2. Wrong point for material: 118 degree may be fine for general steel; stainless and high-strength steel often need 135 degree split point and cobalt grade.
  3. Poor oxide consistency: patchy finish looks cheap and weakens the private-label shelf story.
  4. Rust in storage: steam oxide still needs export packaging, oiling, and dry cartons.
