What Defines a Diamond Segment Procurement Program
Diamond segments are the cutting elements of diamond blades and core bits. A segment is a sintered block of synthetic diamond crystals mixed with a metal-powder matrix, hot-pressed at 700-900°C and 200-400 MPa into a documented hardness and concentration. The segment is then attached to a steel body by laser welding (above 14-inch diameter and any heat-loaded application), silver brazing (small-diameter wet-cut tools), or sintered-direct attachment.
For OEM procurement, sourcing segments only — separately from the body manufacturing — fits three buyer types: re-tipping programs (factory re-welds new segments onto worn blade and core bit bodies), vertically integrated manufacturers (in-house laser welding plus external segment supply), and specialty bond programs (custom matrix formulations matched to unusual substrates). The segment spec is more focused than the finished tool spec — bond, diamond, geometry, dimensions — and the procurement program runs lower MOQ per piece.

| Masonry, brick, block | Hard bond cobalt-iron-tungsten, C20-C25, US 40/50 | Masonry cutting wheels, brick core bits |
| Ductile iron pipe | Specialty bond cobalt-tungsten, C40-C50, US 60/80 | Ductile iron cutoff blades |
Geometry Profiles — Field Performance by Shape
- Flat: General purpose, the workhorse geometry for mid-range concrete and masonry. Lowest cost, broadest application.
- Turbo: Continuous spiral grooves on the cutting face — fast cutting in soft substrate (green concrete, asphalt) where chip evacuation matters.
- Crown: Notched top for fast entry — handheld core bits and angle grinder wheels where the operator needs immediate bite.
- Roof: V-profile cutting edge — concentrates downforce on a point, ideal for hard rebar-dense concrete coring where penetration matters more than width.
- Shark-tooth: Aggressive serrated entry — asphalt cutting blades where the segment must engage variable surface hardness.
- Ordered diamond array: Matrix-positioned diamond crystals in a precise grid — premium wear life in hard substrate where uniform diamond distribution outperforms random placement by 20-30%.
RFQ Checklist
