What Defines a Dry Diamond Core Bit
A dry diamond core bit is designed to cut without water cooling. The segment formula uses dust-evacuation geometry — turbo spiral grooves, vacuum-brazed single-layer crystals, or sintered segments shaped to clear dust at the cutting face. Without water flushing, the bit must be matched to substrates where joint temperature stays low (tile, porcelain, AAC, brick, plain concrete) and to rigs that lack water-delivery (rotary hammers, angle grinders, handheld drills without integrated water).
For OEM procurement, dry diamond is a different product line from wet — different shank standards, different segment shapes, different bond formulas, different stocking channel. A wet bit cannot substitute for a dry bit (the segment will overheat in dust), and a dry bit cannot substitute for a wet bit (the joint geometry assumes dust evacuation, not water flow).
Zhonghuan Dry Diamond Core Bit Lines
| Line | Shank | Construction | Best Substrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| M14 vacuum-brazed | M14 angle-grinder | Single-layer vacuum brazed | Porcelain, granite, glass, hard tile |
| M14 turbo | M14 angle-grinder | Sintered turbo segment | Ceramic tile, soft stone, AAC |
| SDS-Plus dry | SDS-Plus impact | Sintered or silver brazed | Brick, hollow block, light concrete |
| 5/8-11 UNC handheld | 5/8-11 UNC | Laser welded or silver brazed | Brick, concrete, masonry |
Segment Shape for Dry Cutting
Dust evacuation is the binding constraint on a dry diamond segment. Three shapes cover almost all dry applications:
- Turbo — continuous spiral grooves cut into the segment side, the default shape for dry diamond. Excellent dust evacuation, smooth cutting feel, the volume runner for M14 hole saws and SDS-Plus dry diamond.
- Vacuum-brazed single-layer — bare diamond crystals chemically bonded to a steel substrate. Extremely sharp cutting and clean edges on porcelain, granite, and glass; limited diamond reserve (typical service life 20–100 holes).
- Crown / segmented — notched top profile with discrete cutting points. Aggressive cutting in hard substrates, used on SDS-Plus dry diamond for masonry.

OSHA Table 1 HEPA-Vacuum Path
For US construction programs, dry diamond can satisfy OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1153 Table 1 via the HEPA-filtered vacuum + shroud path. The bit needs shroud-compatible geometry: a flat shoulder against which the shroud can seat against the substrate. For OEM RFQs targeting US dry programs, specify shroud-compatible flat-shoulder geometry alongside the dust-evacuation segment shape. See our OSHA Table 1 reference for the full HEPA-vacuum compliance path requirements.
