Reinforced Concrete Coring — The Spec Floor
Reinforced concrete is the most demanding substrate for diamond core drilling and the application where most field failures originate. Rebar contact pushes joint temperatures past the silver brazing limit, hard aggregate wears bond matrix faster, and tube steel sees the highest torsional load of any coring application. Three specs are not optional for reinforced concrete OEM programs:
- Laser-welded segment-to-tube joint — silver brazed bits fail at the 620–650°C rebar joint temperature.
- 30CrMnSi or 42CrMo seamless tube — 45# carbon steel twists under rebar torque load; welded tube cracks along longitudinal seam.
- Bond tuned to substrate hardness — soft bond for hard concrete (C40+), medium for standard (C25–C35), documented against substrate description not code letter.
Skip any one of these three and the bit fails before half the diamond is consumed. See our welding comparison, tube spec reader, and bond hardness reader for the engineering background.

Recommended Reinforced Concrete Bit Ranges
- Backbone structural line — 1¼-7 UNC, Ø52–252 mm, 10 mm laser-welded segment, medium bond, 30CrMnSi tube
- High-strength concrete line — 1¼-7 UNC, Ø82–202 mm, 10 mm laser-welded segment, medium-soft bond, premium cobalt
- Cordless reinforced line — 1¼-7 UNC, Ø52–162 mm, 9 mm × 3 mm thin kerf, soft bond, optimized for MX FUEL / DD 150 / FlexVolt cordless rigs
- Sleeve core line — 1¼-7 UNC, Ø202–500 mm, 12 mm segment, U-slot, for fire-rated penetrations and large openings
Witness Drilling Test
Mandatory acceptance test for reinforced concrete OEM programs:
- Witness substrate: C30 reinforced concrete with #4 rebar at 200 mm spacing.
- Drill 25 holes per sample bit with documented rig settings (RPM, water flow, feed pressure).
- Measure segment height before and after.
- Inspect segment-to-tube joint for any segment loss or weld cracking.
- Document hole roundness, edge quality, and operator feel.
- Pass: all segments attached, wear rate 0.10–0.25 mm per hole, hole roundness within 0.5 mm.
RFQ Checklist
