The SDS-Max TCT Heavy MEP Channel

SDS-Max TCT core bits handle the heavier end of the MEP installation channel — large AC mains, commercial plumbing throughway, industrial conduit, and dust extraction ducting in brick, hollow block, aerated concrete, and light non-structural concrete. The rig is an SDS-Max rotary hammer (Bosch GBH 7/8/11 class, DeWalt D25762, Hilti TE 60/70/80, Makita HM/HR41) delivering 6–25 joules of impact energy per blow — significantly more than SDS-Plus.

The buyer in this channel is the commercial MEP contractor, the AC main installer, the industrial electrical conduit team, and the building services installer working penetrations larger than handheld SDS-Plus can comfortably handle. When Diamond Core Bits Are the Right Tool Instead

SDS-Max TCT core bits handle soft to medium substrates with high tooth count and impact-grade carbide. They are not the right tool for heavy reinforced concrete. The boundary:

  • Use SDS-Max TCT — soft to medium brick, hollow block, aerated concrete, light non-structural concrete, occasional thin rebar contact.
  • Switch to wet diamond core bits — heavy reinforced concrete (#4 / #5 rebar density), hard aggregate concrete, structural penetration where hole accuracy and dust control matter, OSHA Table 1 silica-compliant US workflows.
