SDS-Max Chisels for Concrete Demolition and Breaking

Process Overview

Concrete demolition and breaking covers everything from controlled channel chasing for electrical conduit to full structural removal of walls and slabs. The chisel is the business end of every demolition hammer, and selecting the right profile, width, and steel grade determines job speed, surface quality, and tool life. Zhonghuan manufactures the full range of SDS-Max chisels (pointed, flat, wide, channel) in 40Cr and 55Cr steel grades, factory-direct with OEM branding and packaging flexibility.

Application Scenarios

1. Electrical Conduit Chasing

Substrate: Concrete and masonry walls

Recommended: Channel chisel (U-profile) 26-32 mm, 40Cr steel

Notes: Set hammer to chisel-only mode. Mark chase lines before starting. Guide the channel chisel at a consistent 45-degree angle. For horizontal runs, work from one end to the other in a single pass. For vertical drops, work top to bottom. Clean loose debris from the channel before laying conduit. Do not chase load-bearing walls deeper than one-third of wall thickness without structural approval.

2. Concrete Wall and Slab Demolition

Substrate: Reinforced concrete, 100-300 mm thick

Recommended: Pointed chisel for breaking, flat chisel (50-80 mm) for cleaning

Notes: Start with pointed chisel to fracture the bulk concrete. Work from edges inward, using the natural fracture lines. Switch to flat chisel for surface finishing and removing the last layer before rebar. When preserving rebar for structural tie-in, use controlled impact energy and a flat chisel at a shallow angle to avoid nicking the steel. Pre-drill a line of holes with SDS-Max bits to create a controlled break line when precision is needed.

3. Floor Tile and Adhesive Removal

Substrate: Concrete floor with ceramic tiles, vinyl, or adhesive residue

Recommended: Wide chisel (100-115 mm) for scraping, flat chisel (50 mm) for edges

Notes: Use the wide chisel at a low angle (15-20 degrees) to slide under tiles and adhesive. Start at a broken tile or edge. Work methodically across the floor. For stubborn adhesive residue, the 50 mm flat chisel provides more concentrated force. After removal, the floor may need grinding for smoothness before new flooring installation.

Selection Tips

  1. Task type: Breaking = pointed chisel. Surface removal = flat chisel. Floor scraping = wide chisel. Groove chasing = channel chisel.
  2. Steel grade: Standard concrete (C20-C35) = 40Cr. High-strength concrete (C40+) = 55Cr. General renovation = 40Cr is the cost-effective default.
  3. Chisel width: Wider chisels cover more area but need more impact energy. Match chisel width to your hammer class: 25-50 mm for 5-8 kg hammers, 80-115 mm for 8-12 kg hammers.
