Match the Bit to the Machine, Not the Brand
Application Overview
Hand-held blast-hole and bolt-hole drilling in small-scale mining runs on the 10 kg / 20 J rotary hammer class: Makita HR5212C, DeWalt D25773 (and the 60V DCH733), Bosch GBH 8-45. Every SDS-Max bit physically fits every one of these machines — the interface is universal. What decides whether a bit survives 20 J production duty is the engineering behind the interface: body steel, heat treatment, braze process, head geometry, and length selection. Zhonghuan manufactures SDS-Max mining bits factory-direct for exactly this machine class, OEM and private label.
The 20 J Machine Class
| Machine (10 kg class) | Impact energy | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Makita HR5212C | ≈20 J | The most common machine in Andean small-scale mining — buyers search it as broca para Makita HR5212C |
| DeWalt D25773 / DCH733 (60V) | 19.4 J / 13.3 J | The machines DeWalt markets with its mining bit lines (broca francesa / broca alemana) |
| Bosch GBH 8-45 D/DV | ≈12.5 J | Pairs with the Bosch SDS max-7 / 'QX' mining bits |
There is no machine-specific fitment to worry about: SDS-Max is SDS-Max. Pair the bit to the rock and the hole program, then make sure the bit's construction can absorb what the machine puts out. The drilling technique side — hole patterns, inclination, cost per metre — is covered in our blast-hole drilling guide for small-scale mining.
What 20 J Impact Does to a Drill Bit
A 20 J hammer cycling thousands of strokes per minute is a fatigue test rig. Budget bits fail on these machines in four specific ways, each with an engineering counter:
| Failure mode | Mechanism | Engineering counter |
|---|---|---|
| Battered shank lobes | A dry chuck hammers the shank instead of the rock — the lobes mushroom and the bit seizes in the holder | Hardened SDS-Max shank; grease the shank every shift |
| Body fatigue fracture | Hand-held drilling is never perfectly axial — every stroke adds a bending cycle, amplified on 920 mm bits | 42CrMo alloy body with full heat treatment — see 40Cr vs 42CrMo |
| Carbide detachment | Deep-hole heat cycling works the braze joint until a weak joint lets the head go | Controlled-atmosphere brazing — whole-joint wetting in a controlled-atmosphere furnace |
| Gauge loss / stuck bits | Recycled carbide wears undersize; the hole pinches, cartridges will not seat, bits jam at depth | Virgin carbide only — see virgin vs recycled tungsten carbide |
Length & Diameter Selection
| Hole program | Typical bit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Production blast holes, 450–800 mm deep, ø25 mm cartridges | Ø32 mm × 570 / 620 / 920 mm | Match total length to planned hole depth with reserve for the chuck and collaring; the 32 mm hole gives a ø25 mm (1") cartridge working clearance |
| Shorter rounds, secondary work | Ø32 mm × 450 mm | Stiffer bit, easier collaring on uneven faces |
| Rock bolt / ground support holes | Ø28–38 mm × 450–920 mm | Diameter set by the bolt system — see rock bolt & ground support drilling |
Trade note: Latin American buyers quote mining bits by working length in centimetres — “(40)”, “(60)”, “(80)” ≈ 400 / 580–600 / 800 mm usable. Quotations state both lengths per SKU.
Head Choice by Rock
| Head | Best for |
|---|---|
| 6-cutting-edge (Ultimax-168 class) | Medium-hardness rock, mixed ground, roundest holes — 6-edge program page |
| ZHMAX-7 multi-segmented cutter (SDS max-7 / 'QX' class) | Hard abrasive rock — quartzite, andesite — and deep holes where debris evacuation limits speed — multi-segmented cutter program page |
Both heads run on all three machines. Distributors serving mixed mining customers typically stock both and assign by rock type.
Field Rules That Double Bit Life on 20 J Machines
- Grease the SDS-Max shank every shift. A dry chuck hammers the shank lobes, not the rock.
- Withdraw the bit every 200–300 mm of advance to clear cuttings — packed dust is the main driver of overheating and premature carbide wear.
- Let the hammer do the work. Leaning on the machine adds bending load, not speed — off-axis load is what snaps long bits.
- On generator power, size the generator at no less than twice the hammer's nameplate watts to survive start-up surge.
