Drilling Solutions for Electrical Contractors
Industry Overview
Electrical installation demands precision hole-making across multiple materials — masonry walls, steel enclosures, concrete penetrations, and composite panels. The wrong bit wastes time, damages materials, and creates safety hazards around live circuits. Zhonghuan supplies the full range of cutting tools electrical contractors and distributors need, factory-direct with OEM flexibility.
Recommended Product Lines
| Product | Size Range | Application |
|---|---|---|
| HSS step drills and annular cutters | 14–152 mm | Steel panel knockouts, junction box openings, cable gland holes |
| HSS Step Drills | 16–80 mm | Thin-gauge sheet metal, PVC boards, plastic enclosures |
| ZHPLUS-5X 4-Cutter SDS-Plus Bits | 5–25 mm × 110–600 mm | Cable-tray anchors, conduit-clip fixings and junction-box anchors in concrete and reinforced concrete |
| HSS Step Drill Bits | 4–32 mm | Clean knockouts in sheet metal switchboards without pilot holes |

Application Scenarios
1. Conduit Penetration Through Masonry
Material: Brick, concrete block, lightweight block
Recommended: SDS-Plus 2-cutter bit, 25 mm × 400 mm
Notes: Angle the hole slightly downward (5°) to prevent water ingress into conduit. For cavity walls, drill from inside to outside. Use dust extraction or a vacuum when drilling overhead.
2. Electrical Fixing Anchors in Reinforced Concrete
Material: Hard concrete and reinforced concrete
Recommended: ZHPLUS-5X 4-cutter SDS-Plus drill bit, diameter matched to the cable-tray, conduit-clip or junction-box anchor
Notes: The rebar-resistant cutter geometry is designed to reduce snagging during incidental reinforcement contact. Its anti-jamming carbide cross head and four-flute spiral support stable hole tracking, fast concrete dust evacuation and precise hole geometry. Scan before drilling; do not intentionally cut structural reinforcement with a standard masonry bit.
3. Panel Knockouts in Steel Enclosures
Material: 1.5–3 mm mild steel, stainless steel
Recommended: HSS step drills and annular cutters + arbor with pilot bit
Notes: Clamp the panel securely. Apply cutting fluid. For stainless steel, reduce RPM by 30% compared to mild steel. Do not force — let the teeth do the work to prevent tooth stripping.
4. Cable Gland Holes in Distribution Boards
Material: Sheet metal (0.8–2 mm)
Recommended: HSS step drill bit, 4–32 mm
Notes: Step drills produce burr-free holes without pilot drilling. One bit covers multiple gland sizes. Deburr edges with a countersink or file before fitting glands.
Selection Guide
- Identify the task: Small concrete fixing or anchor → diameter-matched SDS-Plus. Steel panel → HSS step drill or annular cutter. Large conduit, HVAC or plumbing penetration → TCT wall-hole cutter or diamond core drill.
- Determine hole size: Match to cable/conduit diameter plus 2–5 mm clearance.
- Check depth: Wall thickness + 50 mm minimum overshoot for clean exit.
- Choose shank type: SDS-Plus for rotary hammers; hex or round for standard drills.
- Consider volume: For high-volume install jobs, a properly matched step drill or annular cutter improves cost-per-hole versus forcing a carbon-steel cutter.
