The Color Guide (Standard Rawlplugs)
Most wall plugs follow a standard color code. Memorize this, and you will never drill the wrong hole again.
| Plug Color | Drill Bit Size | Screw Size (Gauge) | Typical Load |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow | 5.0 mm | #4 - #8 (3-4mm) | Light (Picture Frames) |
| Red | 6.0 mm | #6 - #10 (3.5-5mm) | Medium (Shelves, Mirrors) |
| Brown | 7.0 mm | #10 - #14 (5-7mm) | Heavy (Cabinets, Curtain Rails) |
| Blue | 10.0 mm | #14 - #18 (6-8mm) | Extra Heavy (TV Brackets) |
Universal vs Standard Plugs
Standard Plugs simply expand outwards. They work great in solid brick or concrete.
Universal Plugs (often two-tone color) are designed to knot up or fold when used in hollow walls (like drywall/plasterboard). Always check the packaging if you are drilling into hollow walls.
Drilling Tips for Brick
- Mark the Depth: Hold the plug against your drill bit. Wrap a piece of tape around the bit slightly longer than the plug length. This stops you from drilling too deep.
- Remove Dust: Move the drill back and forth to clear dust. A hole full of dust will stop the plug from going all the way in.
- Don't Force It: If the plug is tight, tap it gently with a hammer. If it bends, your hole is too small or full of debris.
