EN 13236 Diamond Tools Compliance - Manufacturer Reference for EU Distributors | Zhonghuan

EN 13236 conformity reference for diamond core drills, diamond blades, and superabrasive tools imported into the EU. Buyer's guide to maximum operating speed marking, mounting integrity, manufacturer declarations, and the inspection package Zhonghuan provides for European distributors and importers.

EN 13236 Is the Compliance Layer Behind Every Diamond Tool Sold in the EU

European distributors, importers, and trade-counter buyers who source diamond core drills, diamond saw blades, or other superabrasive tools out of Asia regularly get asked for EN 13236 conformity by their own customers - especially in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Benelux, and France, where end-user safety regulations for power-tool accessories are strictly applied. The question matters because EN 13236 sits inside the Machinery Directive supply chain and underpins the CE conformity of the rotary hammer, angle grinder, or core drill rig that the diamond tool will run on.

This page is the procurement-side companion to our diamond core drill and diamond blade product pages. It is for European buyers who need a clean answer when a customer asks: 'Where is the EN 13236 declaration?'

What EN 13236 Actually Covers

The standard is titled 'Safety requirements for superabrasive products' and addresses diamond and cubic-boron-nitride (CBN) tools. The clause groups that affect distributor due diligence:

  • Maximum operating speed - the manufacturer must declare the maximum permitted RPM, derived from the maximum permitted peripheral speed and the tool diameter. Marking on the tool and packaging must show this clearly.
  • Balance and unbalance - rotating tools must be balanced to a specified class to avoid vibration-induced failure or operator injury.
  • Mounting integrity - threaded mounts (1/2 inch BSP, 5/8-11 UNC, R-1/2, M14) and quick-change shanks (SDS-Plus, SDS-Max, hex) must meet dimensional tolerance and engagement requirements.
  • Segment or rim retention - the diamond segment or rim must remain bonded to the steel core under the operating loads declared by the manufacturer.
  • Marking and packaging - tool body, packaging, and instructions must include max RPM, application limits, warnings, and manufacturer identification.

EN 13236 Is Documented, Not Certified

This is the most common buyer misunderstanding: there is no third-party certification body that issues an 'EN 13236 certificate' the way Notified Bodies issue certificates under other directives. EN 13236 is a harmonised standard under the Machinery Directive supply chain. Conformity is declared by the manufacturer in a technical file. The file should contain:

  1. Product description and intended use.
  2. Maximum operating speed calculation (peripheral speed in m/s, RPM at the nominal diameter).
  3. Balance / unbalance measurement records or class declaration.
  4. Mount thread or shank dimensional inspection.
  5. Segment retention test method and results (typically over-speed test or proof rotation).
  6. Marking layout: tool body, packaging, instructions.
  7. Manufacturer declaration of conformity, signed and dated.

An EU importer or authorised representative keeps a copy of this file and produces it on request from market surveillance authorities. A distributor's role is to verify that the file exists and that the tool marking matches it - not to expect a certificate number.

Recommended Diamond Tool Range Under EN 13236 Documentation

FamilySpecificationEN 13236 Focus
Diamond core drills (wet)25-200 mm, 1/2 inch BSP / 5/8-11 UNC / R-1/2, sintered segmentsMount thread integrity, segment retention, max RPM by diameter
Diamond core drills (dry)6-100 mm, M14 / SDS-Plus / SDS-Max, vacuum-brazedShank dimensional, max RPM, dust-related warnings
Diamond saw blades100-400 mm, segmented / turbo / continuous rim, 22.23 mm borePeripheral speed limit, balance, segment retention, blade marking

Inspection Package for EN 13236 Documentation

Per product line, on request, we provide the records that populate the technical file:

  1. Maximum operating speed calculation: declared peripheral speed, derived RPM at nominal diameter, marking layout reference.
  2. Balance class measurement on the production sample with measurement method (e.g., balancing machine class) and acceptance criterion.
  3. Mount thread or shank — inspect BSP or M14 threads against the specified drawing and applicable thread standard; inspect SDS-Plus or SDS-Max shanks against the approved machine-interface drawing and gauges.
  4. Segment or rim retention test - proof rotation at over-speed for sintered cores, or pull-off test for vacuum-brazed segments.
  5. Carton and tool body marking proof in destination language with max RPM, dimensions, and warnings.
  6. Manufacturer declaration of conformity drafted to EN 13236 with signature, date, and company identification.

What Distributors Should Verify Before Importing

  • The technical file exists and is in the destination language or English.
  • Tool body marking matches the file - max RPM, dimensions, application limits.
  • Packaging marking includes warnings, pictograms, and manufacturer identification.
  • If a CE mark appears on the carton, the corresponding declaration of conformity must reference EN 13236 by clause group.
  • Mount thread or shank dimensional records are available per batch, not just for the original sample.
