Why Shank Is a Compatibility Decision
Grade decides how long an annular cutter lasts; the shank decides whether it fits the customer's machine at all. It is a binary compatibility question, not a performance trade-off: a cutter with the wrong shank does not run slower — it does not mount. For a sourcing program, getting the shank right is what stops a shipment of perfectly good cutters from being unsaleable to a customer whose mag drills use a different system.
The good news is that the market has largely standardized. One shank — the Weldon 19.05mm — covers the large majority of the installed base worldwide. The proprietary systems are real but concentrated around specific machine brands, so a private-label catalogue can lead with Weldon and add a proprietary line only where the demand is documented.
The Weldon Standard
The Weldon shank is a plain cylindrical shank with one or two flats milled along it at 90 degrees. The magnetic drill's arbor has radial set screws (grub screws) that clamp onto those flats; the flats give the screws a positive seat so the cutter transmits torque without slipping and seats at a repeatable depth.
- Weldon 19.05mm (3/4") — the global volume standard for annular cutters, typically with two flats. It fits the large majority of magnetic drilling machines and is the default for cutter diameters up to about Ø60mm. If a buyer does not specify, this is almost always the right shank.
- Weldon 31.75mm (1-1/4") — the larger Weldon for big-diameter cutters (above roughly Ø60mm), where the extra shank diameter gives the set screws enough grip to drive the larger cutting load.
Field check
If the customer's mag-drill arbor has two side set screws you tighten with a hex key, it is a Weldon system. Measure the arbor bore: ~19.05mm bore = 3/4" Weldon; ~31.75mm bore = 1-1/4" Weldon. That measurement plus the machine model is all a supplier needs to confirm fitment.
Proprietary Shanks: Nitto & Fein QuickIN
Two proprietary quick-release shanks dominate the non-Weldon segment, each tied to a machine brand:
- Nitto one-touch — used on Japanese Nitto Kohki Atra Ace magnetic drills and compatible machines common in Japan and parts of Asia. A spring-loaded collar lets the operator push the cutter on and release it by hand, no tools. Cutters are made specifically for this shank, so a buyer on Atra Ace machines needs one-touch cutters, not Weldon.
- Fein QuickIN — the quick-release shank in the Fein and Slugger (Jancy) magnetic-drill ecosystem. Same idea: tool-free cutter changes, locked to the Fein/Slugger machine base. Premium metal-fabrication shops on Fein machines run QuickIN cutters.
The trade-off with both is ecosystem lock-in: they are faster to change but the cutter only fits that machine family. For a distributor, that means a proprietary line is worth stocking only where a real installed base of those machines exists in the channel.
Adapters, Quick-Change & Drill-Press Use
Shank systems are bridged by adapters, which widens where a cutter can run:
- Quick-change adapters convert a Weldon arbor to a push-on collar for faster changes without committing to a full proprietary system.
- Morse-taper arbors (MT2 / MT3) let a Weldon-shank annular cutter mount in a drill press or radial drill spindle. This is how cutters run off a mag drill.
- Weldon-to-keyless / chuck adapters exist but are the least rigid option and are only appropriate for small cutters in stable setups.
The caveat across all of these is rigidity and centering. Annular cutters are designed for the controlled down-feed and rigidity of a magnetic drill. On a drill press they can work, but the setup must be stable and run at the correct lower RPM for the diameter; carbide-tipped cutters tolerate a less-rigid setup better than HSS. Hand-held drills are not suitable.

Sourcing a Shank Line
For a distributor or private-label OEM program, the shank strategy is simple and high-leverage:
- Lead with Weldon 19.05mm. One shank covers the broadest market. Run your full diameter ladder (Ø12–32mm core, up to Ø60mm) on this shank as the baseline catalogue.
- Add Weldon 31.75mm only for large diameters. Above about Ø60mm the larger shank is needed for grip; below it, do not split the SKU.
- Add a proprietary line only on documented machine base. If your channel has real Atra Ace or Fein/Slugger fleets, stock one-touch or QuickIN; otherwise quote them per project. Each proprietary shank is an extra SKU and MOQ.
- Quote pilot pins and arbors as accessory lines. Pins are depth- and shank-specific and wear out; arbors (quick-change, MT2/MT3) let customers adapt a Weldon cutter to other machines. Both drive repeat orders.
