The Substrate Split: Brick, Block, AAC
Premium TCT core bits are not interchangeable across substrate. The bit that excels in solid clay brick will under-perform in aerated concrete (AAC) because the cutting mechanism is different. Brick chips off under impact; AAC crushes under pressure. The carbide tooth geometry and the body wall thickness are tuned differently for each.
- Solid clay brick — the dominant EU MEP substrate. Most premium TCT core bits are tuned here. Bosch, Heller, DeWalt all run strong. Carbide exposure is moderate, body wall is medium.
- Hollow concrete block — the volume substrate for US light-commercial and residential MEP. Bit needs robust body wall to handle the discontinuous load as it transitions through hollow chambers. DeWalt and Bosch lead this substrate.
- Aerated concrete (AAC / Ytong) — common in German and Northern European residential. Bit cuts fast but tends to load up if carbide exposure is too tight. Heller is the EU benchmark; aggressive carbide exposure with wider chip clearance.
- Light non-structural concrete — the boundary case. Premium TCT core bits cut light concrete acceptably but slow; this is where diamond core bits start to be the right tool. Hilti and Bosch handle this transitional substrate; commodity TCT bits fail here.
For OEM private-label programs, the substrate window matters as much as the brand benchmark. A bit tuned for brick will not deliver Heller-equivalent AAC performance even with the same carbide grade. Specify the substrate primary in the RFQ.
Carbide Grade and Brazing Process
Carbide grade is the largest single spec variable
For SDS-Plus impact-driven TCT core bits, the carbide grade decision is binary:
- YG8C / YG11C (cobalt-rich, coarse grain, impact-optimized) — what the premium brands use. Higher cobalt percentage absorbs the impact cycle without micro-cracking. Coarse grain structure delivers toughness at the cost of some peak hardness. Service life on a Ø68 mm SDS-Plus core bit in brick: 200–400 holes per bit at premium spec.
- YG6 / YG8 (lower cobalt, fine grain, abrasion-optimized) — commodity TCT bits. Lower cobalt means higher hardness but lower toughness. The tooth chips under sustained impact rather than wearing. Service life on the same Ø68 mm bit: 30–100 holes before tooth fracture.
The price difference at the raw material level between YG8C and YG8 carbide is small — typically 20–30% on the carbide content cost, which is a fraction of the bit's total cost. The performance difference in the field is 2–4x. This is why a documented carbide grade in the RFQ is the highest-leverage single procurement decision.
Brazing process determines joint fatigue life
Modern premium TCT core bit production runs on two methods: controlled-atmosphere brazing at 1040 °C in a controlled atmosphere (continuous mesh-belt furnace process, full carbide-to-body wetting, no oxidation) and induction brazing (contactless electromagnetic heating, fast cycle time, high consistency for production volume). The DT60100 spec sheet, Bosch's premium SDS-Plus TCT documentation, and Heller's manufacturing pages all reference controlled-atmosphere brazing or equivalent controlled-atmosphere processes; high-volume EU and US manufacturing increasingly relies on induction brazing for the same controlled-joint quality at production speed.
Flame brazing — open atmosphere, oxidation-sensitive, fixture-dependent and operator-skill-dependent — is the legacy commodity-only method. It still appears in low-tier commodity bits but is effectively absent from premium MEP-grade production today. The carbide can be the same YG8C grade, but the open-atmosphere joint fails before the carbide does. A legacy flame-brazed bit will lose teeth at the joint long before the carbide reaches its wear life.
Cost Per Hole: Procurement Logic
The procurement framework that matters for MEP installation is not unit price per bit but cost per hole drilled in service. A premium Ø68 mm SDS-Plus TCT core bit at €15–25 retail running 250 holes in brick costs €0.06–0.10 per hole. A commodity bit at €4–6 retail running 30 holes costs €0.13–0.20 per hole. The premium bit is cheaper per hole and faster (less bit changing) despite the higher unit price.
The procurement framework breaks at two boundaries:
- Low-volume installers — annual MEP volume below 50 holes per size. The premium bit cost per hole logic still applies but the absolute bit cost is more painful. A €25 bit feels expensive when you only drill 10 holes a year with it.
- Reverse-warranty channels — retail markets where the warranty cost of premium bits exceeds the engineering value. Channel returns are higher on premium SKUs when end-users use the bit incorrectly (dry impact in reinforced concrete will destroy any TCT bit regardless of spec).
For distributor and contractor-fleet procurement, the cost-per-hole logic almost always favors the premium spec. The OEM private-label route delivers the same cost-per-hole math at better channel margin than reselling Bosch or DeWalt at distributor discount.

Bosch SDS-Plus TCT Core
Strongest case: EU MEP general installation. Widely stocked in Bauhaus, Hornbach, Screwfix, Toolstation, OBI. Premium engineering at the EU mid-premium price point. Best fit for installers buying through trade supply chains where Bosch already runs procurement.
DeWalt DT60100 / DT603xx
Strongest case: North American and Australian MEP retail. Dominant trade-pack shelf presence at Home Depot Pro, Lowes Pro, and contractor supply. Same engineering tier as Bosch with stronger US/AU channel pull-through.
Hilti TE TCT Core
Strongest case: system-integrated MEP contracting. Best fit for contractors already running Hilti TE rotary hammers with system-account warranty coverage and Hilti dust extraction. The bit is a component of the Hilti system, priced for that integration. Outside the Hilti system, the premium is harder to justify.
Heller TCT Core
Strongest case: EU brick and AAC specialist installation. Premium German engineering at a more modest brand markup than Bosch. Strongest channel through Adolf Würth and similar German trade supply houses. The right answer for installers who want German engineering without paying for the largest marketing budget.
Irwin TCT
Strongest case: US trade-pack retail. Recognized brand in US hardware and trade supply with broad channel availability through Stanley Black & Decker distribution. Mid-tier engineering at mid-tier price; reliable for general masonry MEP but not category-leading on premium specs.
The China Factory Perspective
For a distributor or importer running a TCT core bit program, the most-discussed question is whether a documented Chinese OEM specification can match Bosch or Heller engineering. The honest answer is: at the level of physical specification, yes. The carbide formulation is global (cobalt-tungsten ratio is the same in Yueqing and in Ravensburg); the controlled-atmosphere brazing furnace process is the same physics at any premium-grade factory; the 40Cr and 42CrMo4 body steel is widely available at Chinese steel mills with mill certificates.
What matters is whether the factory documents the specification per production lot. A premium-grade Chinese OEM factory delivers:
- Carbide material certificate with YG8C / YG11C grade designation, cobalt percentage, and grain size class.
- Brazing process documentation — controlled-atmosphere brazing temperature curve, atmosphere control, fixture design.
- Body steel mill certificate — 40Cr or 42CrMo4 with hardness range on tube and shank end.
- Witness drilling sample in the customer's target substrate before mass production approval.
A commodity Chinese factory delivers a per-piece price quote and a sample without specification documentation. The first is OEM, the second is commodity supply. The procurement decision is which channel role you are buying into.
