The diamond core bit market looks chaotic to a new distributor because every major brand publishes its own connection name. In reality there are only six connection families that matter for buying and stocking decisions, and almost no distributor needs to carry all six.

  1. 1¼-7 UNC — the dominant wet-coring thread above Ø50 mm. Used by Hilti DD, Husqvarna DM/DMS, Milwaukee MX FUEL Core Drill, DeWalt FlexVolt, Bosch GDB, WEKA, Pentruder, and the majority of Asian OEM rigs.
  2. 5/8-11 UNC — the small-diameter wet/dry coring thread, mostly Ø25–100 mm, common on handheld rigs in the US market and on some European dry diamond core lines.
  3. Hilti BI / BL / BS — Hilti's proprietary X-Change quick-release shanks, sized small (BI), medium (BL), and large (BS). Closed ecosystem unless you supply an adapter.
  4. Metric M14 / M16 / M18 — used on some European dry diamond core bits intended for angle grinders or specialty handheld drills.

For most distributor catalogues, the right answer is to lead with 1¼-7 UNC as the wet-coring backbone, add 5/8-11 UNC for handheld dry diamond, and decide separately whether the target market needs Hilti X-Change compatibility. The remaining standards are niche.

The Six Connection Families in Detail

1¼-7 UNC — The Wet Coring Backbone

1¼-7 UNC is a 1.25 inch nominal Unified Coarse thread with 7 threads per inch. It is the single most important diamond core bit thread in the global construction market. Almost every wet coring rig above Ø50 mm uses 1¼-7 as either the primary connection or via an X-Change-style adapter.

The thread engages roughly 12–18 mm into the rig spindle. Distributors should specify thread length and shoulder type explicitly because shoulder height affects how far the bit seats and whether it bottoms out against the rig flange. A bit with the correct thread but a wrong shoulder height can vibrate under load.

Water flow inside a 1¼-7 connection is internal — water flows from the rig spindle through the male thread and into the core barrel. There is no separate water connection on the bit itself for this thread family.

5/8-11 UNC — The Small-Diameter Workhorse

5/8-11 UNC is a 5/8 inch nominal Unified Coarse thread with 11 threads per inch. It is the dominant standard for small-diameter dry and wet diamond core bits in the 25–100 mm range. Many handheld diamond drills in the US market use 5/8-11 — the connection is sized for the lower torque of handheld machines.

DeWalt's published statement that its cordless diamond core line is compatible with 5/8-11 and 1¼-7 thread machines from Husqvarna, Milwaukee, Hilti, and WEKA reflects the standard distributor expectation: a North American small-diameter dry diamond bit will be 5/8-11, and a medium-to-large wet bit will be 1¼-7.

Hilti BI / BL / BS — The Closed Ecosystem

Hilti's X-Change quick-release shank system is proprietary. The three families address different rig sizes and bit weight classes:

  • BI — the smallest connection, used on handheld and small dry/wet rigs such as the DD 30-W class. Quick-release for fast bit changes during light coring or repeated small-diameter work.
  • BL — the medium connection used on the DD 150 and DD 200 class machines. This is the most common Hilti X-Change connection in the field.
  • BS — the largest connection, intended for heavy rig coring up to roughly Ø500 mm. Higher torque rating, larger water passage.

None of these are cross-compatible with each other, and none are cross-compatible with 1¼-7 UNC without a dedicated adapter. For a distributor whose channel sells Hilti rigs, this is the single biggest sourcing decision: do you stock only Hilti-branded X-Change bits (closed ecosystem), or do you stock 1¼-7 bits and supply Hilti customers via an adapter or an aftermarket X-Change-compatible bit?

Metric M14 / M16 / M18 — The European Dry Diamond Group

European dry diamond core bits for angle grinders and small handheld drills often use M14 (angle grinder spindle), M16, or M18 metric threads. These are not used for wet coring rigs. The diameter range is typically Ø25–125 mm.

Distributors serving European DIY, tile, electrician, and HVAC channels will see steady demand for M14 dry diamond hole saws. M16 and M18 are less common and tend to be specialty stocking items.

G 1/2 BSP — The Legacy European Wet Thread

G 1/2 (BSP, British Standard Pipe) is a parallel thread with a sealing shoulder. It was widely used on European wet coring rigs in the 1980s and 1990s and still appears on some Diager and older Norton bits. It is being phased out in favor of 1¼-7 UNC. New distributor programs targeting Europe should default to 1¼-7 and treat G 1/2 as a special-order legacy item.

SDS-Plus and SDS-Max — The Impact Exception

SDS-Plus and SDS-Max are not threaded connections — they are quick-release impact shanks designed for rotary hammers. Diamond core bits with SDS shanks exist but are limited to dry coring in thin-wall substrates (Ø32–80 mm typical for SDS-Plus, Ø80–160 mm for SDS-Max). They are used where a contractor wants to drill an occasional core hole in light masonry without owning a dedicated diamond drill.

Wet coring on SDS shanks is not recommended. The impact action of a rotary hammer destroys diamond segments, and the SDS shank is not sealed against water flow.

The pattern from this matrix is clear. Almost every wet coring rig above Ø50 mm uses 1¼-7 UNC as either the native thread or via an adapter from the brand's proprietary system. Hilti is the single significant exception with its X-Change BI/BL/BS family.

A simpler way to think about thread selection is to start from the bit diameter and work backwards to the connection:

Above Ø150 mm, native thread always beats an adapter. The torque required at large diameters magnifies any runout introduced by an adapter joint, and the failure mode is usually a snapped tube weld rather than a thread strip — a more expensive failure than the connection itself.

Adapters & Their Risks

Adapters are common between 5/8-11 UNC and 1¼-7 UNC, and between 1¼-7 UNC and Hilti X-Change. They work, and they are widely sold by aftermarket suppliers including Husqvarna, Marcrist, BLUEROCK, and most Chinese accessory makers. But every adapter introduces three problems that distributors should communicate to end users:

  • Runout. Each additional joint adds 0.05–0.20 mm of runout. On a Ø152 mm bit, a 0.20 mm runout at the shank becomes a measurable wobble at the cutting end and visibly poor hole roundness.
  • Torque loss. A threaded adapter does not lock with the same shoulder seating force as a native thread. Under high torque (large diameter, hard substrate), the adapter joint can loosen mid-cut and require re-tightening.
  • Length. An adapter adds 20–40 mm of stack height. The bit cuts farther from the rig spindle, which changes the leverage and increases the load on the rig bearings.

The practical rule for distributor catalogues: stock adapters as accessories, but do not position them as substitutes for native-thread bits. A customer who needs reliable Ø250 mm wet coring should buy a 1¼-7 UNC bit and a 1¼-7 UNC rig, not a 5/8-11 bit plus an adapter.

Distributor Stocking Strategy

A clean diamond core bit catalogue for a distributor in the EU, North America, or Asia typically looks like this:

Backbone SKUs (carry these by default)

  • 1¼-7 UNC wet coring in Ø52, Ø62, Ø82, Ø102, Ø132, Ø152, Ø162, Ø202, Ø252 mm. These nine sizes cover ~80% of structural MEP penetrations globally.
  • 5/8-11 UNC small-diameter in Ø32, Ø50, Ø75, Ø100 mm for handheld and dry diamond applications.

Channel-specific add-ons

  • M14 dry diamond hole saws in Ø25–125 mm range if the channel sells to tile, electrician, or DIY end users in Europe.
  • SDS-Plus dry diamond in Ø32–80 mm if the channel sells to MEP installers without dedicated diamond rigs.
  • Hilti X-Change BL compatible bits as a separate line if the local Hilti rental and rebar channel justifies it. This is a margin business, not a volume business.

RFQ Wording for an OEM Diamond Core Bit Program

When sourcing diamond core bits from a Chinese OEM factory, the RFQ should specify the connection in unambiguous engineering terms — not by brand name. A factory will deliver exactly what is specified, and brand names are not a specification.

Sample RFQ wording:

Wet diamond core bit, Ø132 mm × 450 mm overall length. Connection: 1¼-7 UNC male thread, thread length 16 mm, shoulder height 4 mm, internal water passage Ø22 mm. Tube material: 30CrMnSi seamless steel, wall thickness 3.0 mm. Segment: laser-welded, height 10 mm, kerf 3.5 mm, diamond concentration 25, bond hardness suitable for medium-hard reinforced concrete. Top-cap and shank-to-tube weld: full circumferential laser weld, X-ray inspection required for the first lot. Compatibility verification: provide three samples for mating test against Hilti DD 250-CA and Husqvarna DM 340 rigs.

This wording leaves no room for the factory to substitute a cheaper thread (5/8-11 trimmed down to fit), a thinner tube, or a brazed segment instead of laser-welded. It also names the verification rigs explicitly, so the supplier has to test compatibility rather than rely on a thread gauge alone.

Most diamond core bit sourcing problems we see at the OEM stage are not segment problems or diamond problems — they are connection problems. A distributor receives a container of 1¼-7 UNC bits that fit the rig but seat unevenly because the shoulder is 1 mm too high. A handheld 5/8-11 bit arrives with the right thread but a tube wall that is too thin to handle wet coring. A claimed Hilti X-Change compatible bit fits the BL holder but loses centering after twenty holes because the locking groove is machined 0.3 mm out of position.

The fix is not to chase brand-compatible labeling. The fix is to write the connection into the engineering specification — thread, shoulder, tube, weld, and verification — and to require sample mating tests before mass production.
