Figure 1.0: Hilti TE-YX SDS-Max Drill Bits: 4-Cutter vs 6-Cutter, Sizes and 40/57 Markings Overview

Key Specification / Takeaways

  • 01. TE-YX includes four- and six-cutter configurations. Hilti’s feature page groups 18–32 mm with four cutters and 35–55 mm with six cutters.
  • 02. The supplied 40/57 example is item 2120427: 40 mm diameter, 450 mm working length and 570 mm overall length.
  • 03. Cutting-edge count, carbide-piece construction, helix geometry and SDS-Max machine capacity are separate selection fields.
  • 04. We turn the reference head, required dimensions and application into an OEM specification and sample plan.

One TE-YX family, two cutting-head layouts

For importers and contractor-supply buyers, a useful Hilti TE-YX comparison starts with the concrete, aggregate, reinforcement and required hole. We use the head photographs, actual sample markings and catalogue dimensions to turn that application into a clear SDS-Max purchasing specification.

Hilti’s TE-YX feature page presents four cutters at 18–32 mm and six cutters at 35–55 mm. Its wider regional configurator also lists smaller diameters. Treat the feature-page groups as the reference configurations shown here and identify the actual SKU when selecting a bit.

Six-cutter star head and interrupted rebar contact

The six-cutter reference has a star-like working face with six active cutting directions. The front view shows the central area, peripheral edges and relief spaces leading back toward the flutes. Hilti explains this layout in terms of maintaining engagement during direct or partial rebar contact, where an edge can otherwise glance off and the bit can bind.

That is a design explanation for interrupted cutting contact. Useful speed and life still depend on the concrete, aggregate, reinforcement, diameter, hammer and operating method. Record the cutting-edge count and carbide construction separately when comparing samples; the six-edge label alone does not specify how many carbide pieces form the head.

Four-cutter references and head identification

The four-cutter photographs show a four-direction cutting face on a narrower drilling profile. Both configurations belong to the professional TE-YX family, with different diameter programmes. An end view is more useful for identifying the working layout than a long side view alone.

The additional four-cutter photographs show the complete bit, cross-shaped head and SDS-Max shank with imperial packaging. Keep each sample paired with its own label. Use the diameter, working length, total length and item number as the purchasing record rather than combining markings from separate examples.

Helix, steel support and SDS-Max shank

In large or deep holes, the head and helix work together. The head opens the cutting path; the flute entrances and spiral provide space for debris to leave the hole. Core section, flute form and steel condition also contribute to stiffness and impact durability.

Hilti describes a heat-treated helix, a slimmer and lighter spiral and a fully embedded head. The supplied 40 mm photographs make the steel support around the cutting area and the flute profile easy to inspect. Head material and joint construction remain distinct fields; these photos support a geometry comparison.

The connection is TE-Y, commonly called SDS-Max. Match the holder and the machine’s permitted drilling capacity. A shared shank system identifies interface fit, while diameter and required working depth determine the practical hammer match.

Reading the 40/57 sample and item 2120427

The supplied 40 mm sample carries a 40 / 1 9/16 diameter marking. Its matching package identifies TE-YX 40/57 and item 2120427, with a Made in Germany marking on that package. These details document this photographed example.

The catalogue specification for 40/57 is 40 mm diameter, 450 mm working length and 570 mm total length. The 57 designation therefore corresponds to the overall-length format of this item; quote working depth separately. The red band and stamped diameter are visible identification details. Assess anchor-hole suitability using the model’s wear indicator and the anchor system’s instructions.

Reference sizes: diameter, working length and total length

The table combines the four-/six-cutter groups from Hilti’s feature page with single-piece reference item numbers and dimensions from its 2022 catalogue. Use it to identify a reference sample, then confirm the supplied item number, pack size and regional availability.

Working length and overall length are independent purchasing fields. For example, both 40/57 and 40/92 have a 40 mm nominal diameter, but their listed working lengths are 450 and 800 mm respectively.

Machine match, anchor holes and penetrations

Hilti illustrates the four-cutter configuration with the TE 50-AVR and the six-cutter configuration with the heavier TE 70-AVR. Those are useful examples of matching the bit programme to the machine. Check the actual hammer model’s limits for the selected diameter and depth.

TE-YX applications include concrete and reinforced-concrete anchor holes, post-installed rebar connections and pipe or conduit penetrations. Follow the anchor system’s hole diameter, depth and cleaning requirements. Where a drilling path crosses structural reinforcement, use the project-approved drilling plan.

Our SDS-Max OEM selection route

We build SDS-Max programmes around the selected substrate, hammer, failure mode and hole specification. For buyers evaluating a six-edge range, our ZHMAX-168 uses three carbide pieces forming six active cutting edges, supported by our published product and manufacturing record.

Start a sample programme with the required diameter, working length, total-length constraint, hammer model and quantity per size. Add the reference head photo or item number. We confirm the proposed geometry, carbide option, body condition and joining details in the approved specification, then agree samples and private-label packaging.

Our illustrated six-edge construction is a concrete OEM selection route. Compare the actual head, carbide support, shank fit and drilling results at the same diameter, depth and substrate when approving the product for your channel.

Frequently asked questions

Are all TE-YX drill bits six-cutter models?

TE-YX includes four- and six-cutter configurations. Hilti’s feature page presents 18–32 mm as four-cutter and 35–55 mm as six-cutter; identify the actual diameter and SKU in the regional range.

What does TE-YX 40/57 mean in the illustrated example?

The catalogue lists item 2120427 at 40 mm diameter, 450 mm working length and 570 mm total length. The full 570 mm is the overall length.

Does six-cutter mean six separate carbide pieces?

It describes six active cutting edges. Record carbide-piece construction separately. Our ZHMAX-168, for example, uses three carbide pieces to form six edges.

What should an importer send for an OEM sample request?

Send the substrate, hammer model, diameter, working depth, total-length constraint and quantity per size, together with a reference head photo or SKU. We confirm the proposed construction and sample plan.
