Three Features, Three Different Jobs

The center of a professional diamond blade can contain several openings, but they do not all do the same job. The center arbor bore locates the blade on the shaft. The removable bushing changes the stated bore size. A drive-pin hole engages a matching pin on a compatible saw. A separate crescent or knockout opening may provide access to remove the bushing.

The buying mistake is to treat every visible hole as proof of universal compatibility. It is not. The center interface is a matched stack: shaft, inner collar, blade bore or bushing, drive pin where specified, outer collar and retaining nut. The blade photograph is only the start; the machine interface decides approval.

Convertible Arbor: 1 in and 20 mm

In high-speed and rescue-blade catalogues, universal or convertible arbor often means a 1 in (25.4 mm) parent bore with a removable 20 mm bushing. Diamond Products defines its UNV format as 1 in and 20 mm, while Norton positions a universal-arbor rescue blade for both 1 in and 20 mm high-speed saws.

The bushing is not permission to improvise other sizes. It must be supplied or approved for that blade, sit correctly within the steel core and allow both collars to clamp the blade faces fully. A 1 in/20 mm arrangement does not cover 7/8 in, 5/8 in, triangular early-entry interfaces or wall-saw flange patterns unless those interfaces are separately specified.

What the Knockout Slot Does

On the illustrated design, the crescent opening is identified as a bushing knockout or access slot: it gives a punch or screwdriver a route to dislodge the removable 20 mm bushing from the 1 in bore. Its job is service access, not blade centering.

Do not generalize that name to every curved opening. Diamond Products separately documents triangular knockouts on early-entry blades, where the triangle belongs to a different machine system. Other blade cores use holes or slots for cooling, noise control, mass reduction, tensioning behaviour or product identification. The drawing—not the silhouette—defines the feature.

How the Drive Pin Engages

The drive-pin hole sits away from the center bore at a defined radius. On a compatible walk-behind saw, the pin projects from one collar, passes through the blade and enters the mating collar. Norton and ICS mounting instructions both require the blade to fit over the arbor and drive pin without being forced.

The pin supplements the friction created by clean, flat, tightly clamped collars. It gives the system positive resistance to blade slippage and relative rotation under cutting load. It does not cure dirty collars, an undersized flange, a loose arbor nut, a damaged bore or an incorrectly positioned hole. If the pin and hole do not align freely, stop: forcing the blade can deform the bore or prevent the collars from seating.

Why Some Blades Have More Holes

A second photograph may show many holes around the steel core. Count alone tells us nothing about mounting compatibility. Only openings dimensioned as part of the arbor/flange interface should engage a machine pin or bolt. Holes farther out may be part of core cooling, acoustic tuning, weight control, stress management or a proprietary flange pattern.

This matters especially when moving between rescue saws, low-horsepower floor saws, early-entry saws and wall saws. These categories can use visually similar circular blades while their collars, pin patterns, guards, spindle speed and required bore are different.
