Two Ways to Core a Big Hole — and Why They Get Confused

Both tools cut a large-diameter hole in concrete or masonry on an SDS-Max rotary hammer, and both read as a "core bit," so buyers order them interchangeably. They are not interchangeable — the difference is in how they remove material, and there is surprisingly little clear guidance on it, which is exactly why the wrong one shows up on site.

The Core Cutter: One-Piece Multi-Flute Head

That makes it the aggressive choice for solid concrete and brick and for deep or blind holes where you cannot pull a plug out. The trade-off is dust: with no cup to trap waste, chips fly, so pair it with extraction indoors.

The Hollow TCT Core Bit: Cup With Carbide Teeth

The Hollow TCT Core Bit — what most of the trade calls a wall hole cutter — is a steel cup with tungsten-carbide teeth brazed around the rim and a centre pilot drill. Its signature features:

  • Hollow cup body — only the ring is cut, so far less material is removed; the core plug collects inside the cup for efficient removal.
  • TCT teeth — wear-resistant brazed carbide for hard masonry and repeated holes.
  • Centre pilot — locates the cut and stops the cup walking on the surface.

Because it cuts a ring rather than the whole bore, it is the efficient through-wall tool — and it shines in hollow block and cavity walls, where the cup spans the void and removes a clean core without blowing out the face. This is the classic plumbing, ventilation and electrical through-wall bit.

Read it simply: the Core Cutter's full-bore aggression wins in solid concrete and brick; the hollow cup wins in hollow and cavity masonry because it spans voids instead of shattering them; in natural stone both work with the right carbide grade.   • Dust-sensitive interiors → the cup traps more waste; run either with a dust extractor.
  • Reinforced concrete with heavy rebar → neither cores steel cleanly; specify a diamond core drill where rebar is dense.

What Doesn't Change: Carbide, Braze, Grind

Both run on the same SDS-Max shank and a heavy rotary hammer, and both live or die on the same three variables: carbide grade, braze quality, and grinding/runout. A cheap core tool with under-brazed teeth sheds carbide on the first cavity wall, and a head that runs out drills oversize. The geometry printed on the label is the start of the spec, not the thing that makes it last.
