Quick Answer: What a CSDA Code Is
Most concrete saw blades 12 inches (300 mm) and larger carry a short code stamped near the arbor — a CSDA code, the classification convention published by the Concrete Sawing & Drilling Association. In three positions it tells you exactly what the blade is built to cut and how to run it:

Read left to right, a code like W–C–F means a wet-only blade for cured concrete on a flat or wall saw. Learn the three positions and you can match any blade to your job — and spot when a blade on the shelf is wrong for the cut, regardless of price or brand.
Position 1 — Operating Method (Wet or Dry)
The first letter tells you how the blade must be cooled:
- W — Wet only. The blade must run with water. Water cools the core and segments and flushes the slurry; run a W blade dry and the core overheats, the tension goes, and segments can fail. Wall and flat saws on reinforced concrete are almost always wet.
- D — Dry or wet. The blade can run dry — with intermittent plunge cuts to let it cool — or wet. Dry-rated blades use heat-tolerant cores and bonds.
Position 2 — Material / Media
The middle letter is the material the blade is engineered for. This is the position most often mismatched:
- C — Cured concrete. Hard, fully set concrete, usually reinforced. The everyday wall-saw target.
- G — Green concrete. Fresh, partially cured concrete — abrasive and soft. Needs a harder, undercut-protected blade than cured concrete.
- A — Asphalt. Highly abrasive; demands a hard bond and core protection or the steel is eaten away below the segment.
- R — Refractories and other specialist media.
The trap: a blade built for cured concrete (C) wears out fast and unsafely in green concrete or asphalt, and a blade for abrasive media (G/A) glazes and stops cutting in hard cured concrete. The material letter is not a suggestion.
Position 3 — Application / Saw Type
- F — Flat saw / wall saw. Floor- or track-guided saws making straight structural cuts. This is the wall-saw letter.
- H — Hand saw. Hand-held ring or chain saws.
- M — Masonry saw. Table and brick saws for block and masonry.
Worked Examples
- W–C–F — wet only · cured concrete · flat/wall saw. The standard reinforced-concrete wall-saw blade.
- W–G–F — wet · green concrete · flat/wall saw. For early-entry or fresh slabs.
- D–A–H — dry or wet · asphalt · hand saw. A portable asphalt blade.
If a blade’s stamp doesn’t match your operating method, material and saw, it is the wrong blade.
The Code Is Only Half the Spec: Bond Hardness
The CSDA letters give the category; the bond hardness tunes the blade to the exact aggregate inside that category — and it works backwards from intuition:
- Hard, dense aggregate (flint, granite, high-quartz) with heavy rebar → a soft, bronze bond that wears fast enough to keep exposing fresh diamond.
- Soft, abrasive material (green concrete, asphalt, sandy aggregate) → a hard, cobalt bond that resists being scrubbed away.
So two blades can both read W–C–F and still cut very differently — one soft-bonded for hard aggregate, one harder for milder mixes. When you order, give the aggregate, not just “concrete.”
Beyond the Code: Diameter, Kerf and Arbor
Three numbers complete a wall- or flat-saw blade spec:
- Diameter sets cut depth — roughly the radius minus the flange. Wall-saw blades run Ø600–1600 mm (24″–60″).
- Kerf is the cut width — typically 0.140″–0.250″ (3.5–6.4 mm) for heavy wall sawing. A wider kerf is more stable; a narrower one cuts faster and wastes less material.
- Arbor / drive must match the saw carriage: 1-3/8″ (Hilti, Pentruder, Longyear), 60 mm / 60H (Husqvarna), or 25.4 mm, with 6- or 9-bolt drive-pin patterns. The right blade with the wrong flange will not mount — confirm the arbor first.
How to Spec a Blade in an RFQ
To get the right blade the first time, give a supplier all four things:
- The CSDA code you run — or the operating method, material and saw if the blade isn’t coded.
- The aggregate and rebar — hard granite vs soft limestone, light vs heavy steel — so the bond is matched.
- Diameter and kerf for your cut depth and saw power.
- Saw make and model so the arbor and drive pattern are correct.
