Plumbers drill through more structural elements than almost any other trade. Every pipe run means negotiating joists, studs, concrete walls, and tiled wet rooms — often in tight spaces with no margin for error. Choose the wrong bit, drill in the wrong place, or create the wrong-sized hole, and you face costly remedial work. 1. Drilling for Pipe Runs

Horizontal and vertical pipe runs require drilling through different structural elements, and the correct approach varies significantly between timber and masonry construction.

Drilling Through Timber Joists and Studs

In domestic timber-frame construction, the critical rule is: never notch or drill where it will weaken a joist beyond code limits. Under UK Building Regulations and IRC span tables (used widely in international practice), holes drilled through the neutral axis of a joist must be within the middle third of the joist depth, and should not exceed 0.25× the joist depth in diameter. Notches are far more damaging and must be kept to the top or bottom quarter of the joist within the outer quarter of the span.

Rule of Thumb

For a 200mm deep joist, the maximum hole diameter is 50mm, and it must be drilled in the centre zone — no closer than 50mm to either edge.

Bit selection for timber: For holes up to 32mm in softwood joists, a wood-boring bit matched to the hole size is fast and economical. Wet vs Dry Core Drilling

Diamond core bits designed for wet drilling use water flowing through the centre of the bit to cool the diamond segments and flush cuttings. Drilling through a tiled wet wall — in a shower enclosure, behind a bath panel, or in a tiled utility room — requires patience and the right bit sequence to avoid cracking tiles or disturbing grout lines.

Step-by-Step: Drilling Through Ceramic or Porcelain Tile

1. Mark the hole position precisely. Use masking tape over the tile surface to prevent the bit from skating across the glaze.
2. Using a carbide-tipped tile drill bit (or a diamond-tipped tile bit for porcelain), start drilling at a very slow speed with no hammer action. Let the bit cut its way through the tile and adhesive layer. Applying water with a sponge will cool the tip and prevent micro-cracks in porcelain.
3. Once through the tile, switch to a masonry bit or SDS masonry bit appropriate for the substrate behind (usually a sand-cement render or plasterboard).
4. Never use hammer action while the bit is still in contact with the tile — the percussive force will crack even a hard porcelain tile.

Sealing Pipe Penetrations Through Wet Walls

Any pipe passing through a tiled wet wall must be sealed with a flexible, waterproof sealant — silicone or a proprietary plumber's escutcheon plate with integral seal. A rigid chrome escutcheon plate alone is not sufficient if the pipe can move slightly. Back-fill the annular gap around the pipe sleeve with non-shrink grout before applying the silicone bead.

6. Safety on Site

Plumbing drilling work presents several hazards that are specific to the trade:
