Stopped Cutting Usually Means Glazed, Not Dead
A premium diamond blade that suddenly cuts slowly, smokes, polishes the surface instead of biting into it, or seems to have gone "dull" is almost always glazed — not worn out. This is one of the most expensive misdiagnoses in the field, because a glazed blade looks finished and gets scrapped when it had most of its life left. If there is segment height remaining, the blade is recoverable in a couple of minutes.

What Glazing Is
A diamond blade cuts by a self-sharpening cycle. Diamond crystals at the segment surface do the cutting; as they dull, the metal bond holding them is designed to wear away and release them, exposing fresh sharp diamonds in the layer underneath. The blade stays sharp because it is continuously shedding spent diamond and presenting new diamond.
Glazing breaks that cycle. The bond stops eroding, so the dulled diamonds stay locked in the segment and no fresh diamond reaches the surface. The cutting face goes smooth, glassy, and shiny. Now the blade rubs against the material instead of cutting it — friction instead of cutting action — which generates heat, smoke, and almost no progress. The visual tell is a segment that looks polished and glassy rather than rough with exposed diamond grit.
Why It Happens
The dominant root cause is a bond that is too hard for the material. Hard, dense material — cured concrete, granite, engineered stone — needs a soft bond that erodes fast enough to keep exposing fresh diamond. Put a hard-bond blade on that material and the bond will not wear back, the dull diamonds stay put, and the blade glazes. - Too little feed pressure — riding the blade lightly lets it polish the surface instead of biting. Firm, steady pressure keeps the cycle going (within the saw's safe range).
- Material too soft or non-abrasive — there is not enough abrasion to wear the bond, so even a correct blade can glaze on unusually soft material.
- Wrong wet/dry use or poor water flow — incorrect cooling changes how the bond wears.
How to Dress a Glazed Blade
Dressing means cutting a soft, abrasive material that grinds the smooth bond back and re-exposes the diamond. Options, in order of convenience:
- A purpose-made dressing stone or abrasive dressing block — the cleanest method, made for exactly this.
- Sandstone, a cinder block, an abrasive brick, or asphalt — any soft, gritty material on hand works.
Make several plunge or pass cuts into the abrasive material. The loose grit wears away the glassy bond surface, releases the dulled diamonds, and exposes fresh sharp diamond underneath. Within a few cuts the blade is cutting freely again. On a wet blade, dress with the water running as normal. The whole process takes a couple of minutes — far cheaper than replacing a blade that still has segment left.
How to Prevent It Coming Back
Dressing fixes a glaze, but if a blade glazes again and again, dressing is treating the symptom. A blade that repeatedly glazes is mismatched to the material — almost always a bond that is too hard for what it is cutting. The permanent fix is the correct bond: a soft bond for hard, dense material. No amount of dressing turns a hard-bond blade into the right tool for granite.
