The Six-Figure Order We Refused
A buyer approached Zhonghuan for a serious SDS-Plus and SDS-Max private-label program. The specification called for DIN/PGM dimensional control, 42CrMo hardened steel, defined YG11C/YG8C carbide grades and full controlled-atmosphere brazed heads for reinforced-concrete work. This was not an ordinary catalogue order.
We responded like an engineering manufacturer. We sent teardown videos of unbrazed heads, CAD comparisons between multi-insert cutter geometry and a conventional flat cross plate, and close-up explanations of the angled side cutters designed to keep cutting when the head meets reinforcement off-center.
The buyer's written response: “The multi-insert architecture and engineering are highly impressive. It is clear your factory prioritizes top-tier structural integrity.”
Then the pricing logic changed. Their German supplier could carry a Made in Germany label. If they switched to China, they argued, Zhonghuan had to price the engineered product like a closeout lot to compensate for the loss of that label.
We declined. A rotary hammer bit striking reinforced concrete does not respond to the flag on the package. It responds to carbide volume and grade, steel, heat treatment, head symmetry, flute geometry and the integrity of the joint holding the cutter under repeated impact.
The Same Copper Color Can Hide Two Different Products
The comparison image above captures the commercial problem. The left head carries the natural copper-toned trace left by its brazing alloy. The right sample has a dark copper-colored melamine-based surface treatment designed to reproduce the appearance buyers associate with brazing.

This substitution works because buyers often approve photographs instead of the production route. On a shelf or quotation sheet, both products can look copper colored. In reinforced concrete, only one color is attached to a joining process.
What a Real Controlled-Atmosphere Brazed Carbide Joint Does
Controlled-atmosphere brazing is not decorative heating. The carbide inserts and steel body are cleaned, located with a designed joint clearance, assembled with a compatible filler alloy and heated in a controlled low-pressure environment. The filler melts and flows across the prepared interface while the carbide and steel remain solid.
The TWI definition of controlled-atmosphere brazing describes the same essential mechanism: filler material melts and flows into the gaps between the parts. The joint therefore depends on surface preparation, fit, filler selection, temperature cycle and coverage—not on the final color.
Head architecture matters. This article concerns brazed multi-insert and segmented cutter heads. A one-piece full solid carbide head may use a different structural joining route, including resistance friction welding. The correct question is not “Is every premium bit controlled-atmosphere brazed?” It is “Does the delivered head use the joining process specified for that architecture?”
Why Cosmetic Coating Fails Under Real Drilling Load
An SDS head experiences repeated axial impact, torsion, abrasive concrete dust and local heating. Side contact with aggregate or reinforcement loads one cutter more heavily than a clean centered strike. The joint must transfer that load from brittle, wear-resistant carbide into a tougher steel body.
A colored organic surface film transfers none of that load. Under heat and abrasion it can discolor, char or wear away. If the hidden carbide-to-steel connection was never produced to the specified route, the visual finish only delays discovery until drilling begins. Typical outcomes include a loose insert, partial cutter loss, head fracture or inconsistent hole geometry.
That is why a polished head photo is weak evidence. The American Welding Society's AWS C3.14 evaluation method covers visual and metallographic examination of wetting, filler penetration, voids, cracks and other joint features. Serious verification looks inside the interface.
Five Checks for OEM Buyers
- Request the head before finishing. Ask for photographs or video after joining and before blasting, coating or final cleaning. This immediately separates a process from a color.
- Lock the construction in the RFQ. State head architecture, carbide grade and dimensions, body steel, heat treatment, joining method, tolerance and intended substrate.
- Cut one sample open. A polished cross-section reveals filler penetration, voids, unsupported carbide and whether the interface matches the approved drawing.
- Define a destructive joint test. Agree on the fixture, load direction, sample count and acceptance rule before production. A vague claim of strong welding is not an inspection plan.
- Repeat the check on production lots. The approved sample matters only when the same material and joining route reach the shipment.

Price Is the Output of a Specification
Two bits with the same diameter, working length and copper-colored head are not necessarily the same product. A quotation changes when the buyer changes carbide volume, grade, body steel, heat treatment, cutter geometry, joining route, run-out acceptance, packaging or inspection.
Professional value engineering is transparent. We can change the head tier, simplify the size range, use standard packaging or adjust the inspection plan. What we will not do is approve one structural specification and silently ship a visually similar substitute.
Where Zhonghuan Draws the Line
We did not walk away because the buyer negotiated. Negotiation is part of OEM business. We walked away because the target price and the locked engineering specification no longer described the same drill bit.
