The TE-CX SDS-Plus line is defined by five specifications that together justify its premium pricing:

- System integration with Hilti anchors — anchor indicator marks on the bit correspond to Hilti's approved-anchor installation depth guidance. TE-CX bits, Hilti rotary hammers, and Hilti anchors are engineered as a verified combination.
That fifth point is the one that makes TE-CX different from a buyer's perspective. Bosch EXPERT 7X and Milwaukee MX4 are excellent bits, but neither carries Hilti's system-level accountability — where the anchor manufacturer, the drilling specification, and the approval documentation come from a single source.
When Buyers Actually Seek Alternatives to TE-CX
The practical drivers for seeking TE-CX alternatives are narrower than with EXPERT 7X, because TE-CX buyers have typically already made the decision to pay a premium. The real triggers:
- Hilti pricing is out of budget scope. Public UK market samples show TE-CX 6/17 singles at £6.51–£9.99 in some channels, Hilti direct from £22.04 upward. For lower-budget projects or cost-pressured fleet programs, the price point is a hard constraint.
- Project does not require Hilti system accountability. Not every drilling job is anchor-critical. For general concrete, masonry, and renovation drilling, the Hilti system premium buys nothing that a lower-priced premium alternative cannot match.
- The buyer is already on a non-Hilti rotary hammer platform. For contractors running Bosch, Milwaukee, DeWalt, or Makita rotary hammers, the "Hilti system" integration argument does not apply, and paying a Hilti premium for drill bits alone is harder to justify.
- OEM or private-label distribution economics. At distributor volumes or in private-label programs, the Hilti brand premium cannot be captured because Hilti does not sell at OEM terms.
Spec-Matched Alternatives: European Premium Segment
Within the premium branded market, two bits come closest to TE-CX on specification — though neither matches Hilti's system-integration accountability:

What these alternatives do not replicate is Hilti's approved-anchor engineering. If you are installing a Hilti HSA-R, HST, or HKD anchor to a published load rating, TE-CX is the drill bit specified by Hilti's own approval documentation. Substituting another bit — even a spec-equivalent one — means you are installing a Hilti anchor with a non-Hilti drilling specification, which may not match Hilti's published load data.
Chinese OEM-Spec Alternatives: What Factory-Level Can Deliver
Direct factory sourcing at OEM specification parity is a commercially valid alternative for the drilling component specifically, with two important caveats upfront: OEM-direct sourcing does not replicate Hilti system accountability, and it only makes sense at distribution volume with documented QC.
The specifications to require for genuine TE-CX parity on the drilling component:

The anchor-indicator mark is deliberately different. Hilti's anchor depth marks correspond to specific Hilti anchor products; replicating that marking on an OEM bit would create installation risk and is inappropriate. Generic depth markings on the shank provide equivalent practical functionality for non-Hilti anchor systems.
How to Verify an Alternative Meets the Drilling Specification
For the drilling component specifically — setting aside the anchor system question — the verification checklist is the same as for any premium SDS-Plus evaluation:
- Require a material certificate specifying the carbide grade — YG8C or YG8C+ with WC/Co percentages and grain size class. Reject anything that says only "high-quality tungsten carbide" without a grade.

- Require PGM certification for anchor-critical diameters — not just CE. PGM specifically tests hole tolerance in standard test material, which is what determines whether anchor load ratings apply.
- Test a sample against a TE-CX equivalent — drill 20 holes in C30/37 concrete, measure hole diameter with a pin gauge. A spec-parity OEM bit should produce holes within PGM tolerance on a repeat basis.
- Request process documentation for brazing or grinding — the factory's willingness to document the specific process is a quality signal in itself. Factories with no process controls will not have process documentation.
When Not to Switch: TE-CX Remains the Right Answer
Hilti's premium pricing buys real things that alternatives cannot replicate. These cases are narrower than many buyers assume, but they are real:
- Hilti approved-anchor installations where load rating matters. If you are installing Hilti HSA, HST, HKD, HIT-HY, or similar to a published ETA load rating, TE-CX is the drill bit Hilti specifies. Using a non-Hilti drill bit with a Hilti anchor means you are installing the anchor with non-Hilti drilling specification, which may void the published load data. For structural anchor work in regulated construction, this is not a margin to be cut.
- Tender and approval documentation that names TE-CX specifically. Some EU infrastructure tenders, facade anchor specifications, and structural retrofit documents list TE-CX by name. Specification substitution requires engineer approval, which is a separate process.
- Liability and traceability-sensitive projects. Where an anchor failure would trigger insurance or legal review, "we used Hilti's full system per their documentation" is a defensible procurement position. "We used a spec-equivalent alternative" is technically defensible but harder to document.
- Existing Hilti system investment. Contractors who are already using Hilti anchors, Hilti rotary hammers, and Hilti setting tools typically capture diminishing marginal savings from switching drill bits alone, while complicating the system-level accountability.
For general concrete drilling, non-critical anchor work, renovation, MEP installation, and the majority of drilling use cases, the drilling-specification parity arguments apply and OEM-direct or lower-priced premium alternatives become commercially rational.
