What Are Concrete Screws?

Concrete screws—also known as masonry screws or self-tapping concrete screws—are fasteners designed to anchor directly into concrete, brick, or block without the need for a separate anchor or plug. Tapcon is a widely recognized brand name that has become synonymous with this type of fastener.

These screws feature a specially engineered hi-lo thread profile that cuts grooves into the concrete as the screw is driven in. The alternating high and low threads reduce installation torque while creating a strong mechanical bond with the base material. A correctly sized pilot hole is critical: too large and the threads cannot grip; too small and the screw may snap during installation.

Note: The pilot hole diameter is typically 1–1.5mm smaller than the screw diameter. Always drill the hole at least 6mm (1/4") deeper than the intended embedment depth to allow for dust accumulation.

Minimum Edge Distance & Spacing

Maintaining proper edge distance and spacing between concrete screws is essential to prevent concrete cracking and blowout. Screws installed too close to an edge or to each other can cause the concrete to split, resulting in fastener failure.

General rule: Minimum edge distance = 5× screw diameter. Minimum spacing between screws = 10× screw diameter. When installing near corners, maintain edge distance on both sides.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

  1. Mark the position: Use a pencil or marker to mark the exact screw location on the concrete surface. If fastening a fixture, hold or clamp it in position and mark through the mounting holes.
  2. Drill the pilot hole: Using an SDS-Plus hammer drill fitted with a carbide-tipped masonry bit of the correct diameter, drill the pilot hole to the required depth. Use the depth stop or wrap tape around the bit to mark the target depth.
  3. Clean the hole: Remove dust and debris from the hole using compressed air, a vacuum, or a hand blower. Residual dust reduces thread engagement and holding strength.
  4. Position the fixture: Align the fixture over the drilled hole. Ensure the mounting holes line up with the pilot holes.
  5. Drive the screw: Insert the concrete screw and drive it using a drill/driver or impact driver at moderate speed. Do not over-torque—stop when the screw head is snug against the fixture. Over-driving can strip the threads cut into the concrete.

Important: Always use a carbide-tipped masonry drill bit matched to the correct pilot hole diameter. Standard HSS bits will not penetrate concrete and will dull immediately.

Troubleshooting Concrete Screws

Screw Won't Bite / Won't Tighten

Cause: Pilot hole is too large or drill bit is worn and drilling oversized. Fix: Verify the drill bit diameter with calipers. Replace worn bits. If the hole is already oversized, move to a new location or use the next size larger screw.

Screw Breaks During Installation

Cause: Pilot hole is too small or too shallow, creating excessive resistance. Fix: Ensure the pilot hole matches the chart dimensions above. Drill deeper to provide adequate clearance. Reduce driving speed and avoid excessive downward pressure.

Concrete Cracks Around the Screw

Cause: Screw installed too close to an edge or too close to another screw. Fix: Maintain the minimum edge distances listed in the spacing table above. Never install closer than 5× screw diameter from any edge.

Screw Spins Freely / No Holding Power

Cause: Threads in the concrete are stripped, often from over-torquing or reinstalling in the same hole. Fix: Concrete screw holes should not be reused. Drill a new pilot hole at least 50mm away from the failed location and install a new screw.

Tightening Torque by Screw Diameter and Concrete Grade

Over-torquing strips the threads cut into concrete; under-torquing leaves anchors loose. This table gives maximum installation torque for concrete screws by screw size and concrete compressive strength.

Always use a calibrated torque wrench or a drill driver with an adjustable clutch for sizes 12mm and above. Exceeding maximum torque in C20 concrete by more than 20% typically results in thread pull-out on the first load application.
