Self-sharpening flat chisels can have visibly different working ends. The HS1935-style reference shows broad, elongated grooves separated by a central ridge. The second reference uses a more flared, tapered rib-and-groove layout. Both are flat chisels, but the shape behind the cutting edge deserves a closer look.
At Zhonghuan Tools, we assess the complete working profile, then match the machine, material and finished-tool specification. This guide separates what a photograph shows from the dimensions and compatibility a buyer needs to order.
Long grooves versus a flared working profile
The two long-groove reference views show similar head layouts: two broad recesses run along the working zone, leaving material between them and at the outer edges. The flared reference has a more pronounced neck-to-blade expansion and a different arrangement of tapered longitudinal features.
| Visible feature | Long-groove reference | Flared-profile reference |
|---|---|---|
| Main surface pattern | Broad elongated recesses with a central ridge | Tapered ribs and recesses within a more flared outline |
| Transition | Relatively restrained change into the working zone | More visible expansion from neck to blade |
| Cutting edge | Broadly straight flat edge | Broadly straight flat edge |
| What to compare in a sample | Groove section, edge thickness and remaining support | Rib/recess section, transition and remaining support |
These descriptions identify the pictured geometry, not standardized performance classes. Image enlargement and lighting do not establish exact groove depth or a durability ranking.
Are they grooves or ribs?
A groove is a recessed region. A ridge or rib is material standing above an adjacent recess. Both can exist on the same working face. Calling a tool “ribbed” does not establish that every ridge projects above the original outer surface of the blade.
The supplied HS1935-style graphic explicitly labels self-sharpening grooves. Its central and outer lands remain part of the working section. For manufacturing, the useful dimensions are the actual cross-section, groove width and depth, land thickness and transition radii. A side view or section drawing answers these questions more directly than a front photograph.
What self-sharpening means during wear
The shape behind the edge affects the working section exposed as the tip wears back. A self-sharpening design aims to retain a useful breaking profile through that wear. It is not a promise that the initial bevel stays unchanged.
Bosch lists HS1935 in its SDS-Max R-Tec flat-chisel family, with a one-piece design and self-sharpening positioning. Its product information emphasizes concrete removal and reduced binding. Bosch R-Tec flat chisels
For a sample comparison, inspect the remaining edge after comparable work. Record material removed, time spent freeing the tool and the condition of the working end. A useful groove profile still needs appropriate steel and heat treatment.
HS1935 and HEX 22-5C use different interfaces
| Confirmed reference | Connection | Published edge width × overall length |
|---|---|---|
| Bosch HS1935 R-Tec flat chisel | SDS-Max | 1 in × 16 in |
| Bosch PRO HEX 22-5C, 2608690190 | HEX 22 | 30 × 400 mm |
HS1935’s published imperial dimensions convert to 25.4 × 406.4 mm. They should not silently become an exact 25 × 400 mm drawing. Bosch identifies 2608690190 as a HEX 22 tool. Similar working heads do not make these interfaces interchangeable. HS1935 specifications, Bosch HEX 22-5C specifications
The unlabelled flared reference is used here for geometry inspection only. Its exact SKU is not assigned from resemblance to a retailer photograph. Confirm the complete connection end and part number before selecting the machine.
A practical drilling-and-chiselling workflow
Where the approved work plan uses drilled outline holes for a local concrete opening, the drill bit establishes the specified holes and the flat chisel removes the permitted webs of material between them. The operation combines controlled drilling with impact removal.
Choose drill diameter and depth from the work plan, and choose the chisel from access, removal direction and hammer compatibility. Use the supported drilling mode for the bit and hammer-only chiselling mode for the chisel. Locate embedded services and reinforcement before work, and follow the project requirements for any reinforcement encountered.
Assess the complete cycle, including positioning and release time. This is more useful than judging a chisel solely by its fresh edge or assuming self-sharpening means it can never get trapped. SDS drill-bit and chisel combinations
Specifying a premium factory alternative
Our premium chisel program uses 42CrMo chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, with working geometry and heat-treatment requirements matched to the intended hammer duty. We define the edge, neck, body and connection as one finished-tool specification.
For a long-groove or flared-profile project, agree the complete section and dimensions, then compare samples on the relevant machine and material. Inspection locations and acceptance requirements should follow the model. The reference product establishes an application target; our material and production specification defines the supplied tool.
Our own point-and-flat SDS-Max set uses a 400 mm pointed chisel and a 25 × 400 mm flat chisel. Those are our stated dimensions, separate from HS1935’s imperial specification. Our 400 mm two-piece set
Frequently asked questions
Do grooves mean the chisel is damaged?
No. Repeated, deliberately formed recesses can be part of the working design. Chips, cracks and irregular missing material require a separate condition assessment.
Is the flared profile automatically faster?
No ranking follows from the outline alone. Compare the full geometry, steel, treatment, machine, substrate and completed work.
Can an SDS-Max chisel fit a HEX 22 holder?
Not directly. These are different connection systems. Choose the tool specified for the actual holder and supported operating mode.
Is our 400 mm chisel the same nominal length as HS1935?
Our set is specified at 400 mm. HS1935 is published at 16 inches, equivalent to 406.4 mm. Keep the order dimensions explicit.
