SDS-Plus vs SDS-Max: The System Difference

SDS-Plus is not simply a smaller SDS-Max. The two systems represent fundamentally different engineering requirements, and the drill bits designed for each reflect those requirements in every specification.

SDS-Plus operates on a 10mm round shank with two slots that lock into the hammer mechanism. Machines in the SDS-Plus class typically deliver 2–5 joules of impact energy per stroke. This energy level enables drilling Ø12–40mm (and beyond with core bit adapters) in reinforced concrete, structural foundations, and rebar-dense slab work. Rebar contact is the most destructive event for an SDS-Plus drill bit. A 4-cutter MX4 head distributes this impact across four smaller edges, reducing the peak force per edge and extending carbide life through rebar encounters.

For applications in plain concrete or block without rebar, 2-cutter heads at lower cost deliver equivalent results.
