Application first: what are you drilling?
We evaluate an SDS-Max drill bit from the job backwards: concrete strength, aggregate abrasiveness, reinforcement encounters, hole diameter and depth, then the rotary hammer and its impact output. A long bit in a deep hole has different demands from a short bit making repeated shallow holes. Buyers should compare the same diameter, working length and overall length before comparing prices. SDS-Max requires an SDS-Max rotary hammer; the shank does not fit an SDS-Plus holder.
Four cutting edges do not define the whole head
Milwaukee’s Australian 4-cut SDS-Max listing describes a primary cutter supported by secondary cutters. Its US MX4 SDS-Max listing describes solid-head carbide. Both are four-cutter products, but buyers should identify the actual part number and construction. The supplied hero illustrates an SDS-Max four-cutter head, deep helix and shank; it is not a specification sheet for every Milwaukee SKU. In manufacturing terms, carbide volume, insert geometry, grinding operations and the carbide-to-steel joint all influence cost. Four edges alone do not establish equal performance.
Body, flute and shank: the rest of the cost
Carbide cuts at the front, but the steel body transfers repeated impact and torque. Deeper flutes need enough space to discharge debris while retaining steel around the core. Longer bodies bring additional straightness and handling demands. Heat treatment, shank machining and control of the head joint must work together. Our engineering assessment is that these operations and their acceptance limits explain meaningful cost differences between superficially similar bits. Surface colour or a brand logo cannot tell a buyer the body grade, joining route or completed inspection.
What the retail premium includes
A branded retail price can include product development, quality control, packaging, local stock, distribution margin and customer support, alongside manufacturing. The exact split is commercial information; we do not assign invented percentages to Milwaukee’s costs. Compare quotations within the same country, tax basis, size and pack quantity. A short small-diameter bit and a long large-diameter bit are different purchases even when both carry an SDS-Max label. For repeat use, calculate cost per accepted hole: bit purchase cost plus allocated drilling labour and replacement downtime, divided by holes that meet the required diameter and depth.
How to compare a sample fairly
Use the same substrate, hole depth, machine, operating mode and dust-removal routine. Record drilling time, completed holes, gauge wear, edge damage and the reason each bit leaves service. Identify whether the limiting failure is slow penetration, head wear, joint damage, body bending or shank wear. This makes the engineering response specific: head architecture, carbide selection, joining process or body treatment. A full-carbide head and a brazed multi-insert head should be assessed as separate configurations. Reinforcement cutting must follow the approved structural drilling plan.
