It is common to see product pages loosely write "ISO 5468 / DIN 8039" beside SDS hammer bits, but that mixes two different things: a masonry-bit dimensional standard and a rotary-hammer chuck interface.

Where DIN 8039 belongs: straight-shank masonry bits

DIN 8039 is the name buyers usually meet in the round-shank or multi-flat-shank concrete drill bit category. In supplier catalogues it is paired with carbide-tipped masonry drills used in standard drills or percussion drills with a three-jaw chuck. That is a different product lane from SDS-Plus and SDS-Max, where the shank is a locking interface for a rotary hammer.

For procurement, DIN 8039 is useful because it tells the buyer that the supplier is working inside a known European masonry-bit format. It helps align diameter, total length, working length, shank format and baseline dimensional expectations. It does not tell you the carbide grade, braze quality, drilling speed, rebar tolerance or anchor-hole certification.

Use DIN 8039 language when your RFQ is for straight-shank masonry bits such as 4-25 mm carbide-tipped concrete drills for hardware, professional trade counters or distributor value lines. Do not use it as proof that an SDS-Plus bit will lock properly in a Bosch, Hilti, Makita, DeWalt or Milwaukee rotary hammer. That fit is a shank-gauge question, not a DIN 8039 question.

What ISO 5468 actually covers

ISO lists ISO 5468 as Rotary and rotary impact masonry drill bits with hardmetal tips - Dimensions. The public ISO abstract describes a dimensional standard for hardmetal-tipped masonry bits in the 4-25 mm diameter range, with short, long and extra-long length series. PGM's own technical guidance is even more explicit for our category: for hammer drill bits with SDS shank, ISO 5468 conformity should not be declared because the standard covers cylindrical-shank rotary and rotary-impact masonry bits.

That distinction matters in import paperwork. ISO 5468 is a useful standard reference for straight-shank masonry bits. It is not a universal badge that proves a masonry bit is suitable for structural anchoring, nor does it define the SDS-Plus 10 mm or SDS-Max 18 mm interface.

Procurement note

If a quote says "SDS-Max bit, ISO 5468 / DIN 8039 shank standard," ask the supplier to rewrite it. The correct wording is usually: SDS-Max shank compatibility checked by gauge, carbide head geometry specified by drawing or approved sample, and PGM only if the product is actually PGM-certified for anchor work.

Why PGM is a different claim from DIN 8039 or ISO 5468

PGM is not another name for ISO 5468. It is a certification path focused on the hole produced by a masonry drill bit when anchor accuracy matters. PGM checks the drilling result: carbide-tip diameter, symmetrical soldering, concentricity and whether the drilled hole remains within the tolerance needed for secure anchor connections.

That is why PGM is the stronger signal for structural anchor ranges. A bit can be dimensionally aligned with a masonry-bit standard and still produce poor holes if the carbide is off-centre, the head is soldered asymmetrically, the body runs out, or the flute lets the bit wander. PGM is designed to catch that category of failure.

For non-structural drilling, PGM may be unnecessary. For mechanical anchors, facade fixing, curtain wall fixing and distributor ranges sold into professional anchor channels, it is often the exact requirement the buyer should write into the RFQ.

RFQ wording by product type

The safest way to avoid standard confusion is to write RFQs by product family, not by copying a competitor's catalogue line. Use the following wording patterns as a starting point.

  • "CE covers drilling performance" - CE is market-access compliance, not a claim that the bit drills faster or holds gauge longer.

The better catalogue wording is more precise: ISO 9001 quality system, CE documentation for applicable markets, SDS shank fit checked by gauge, carbide/head geometry by approved sample, PGM certification where the product is sold for anchor-critical drilling. That reads less flashy, but it is the wording procurement teams can defend.
