SDS-Max drill bits are supplied through two channels: premium power-tool brands — Bosch, Hilti, Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee — whose accessory lines set the specification ceiling for the 5–20J energy class, and factory-direct OEM manufacturers that build to the same carbide, brazing, and heat-treatment specifications for private-label programs. How China's SDS-Max drill bit supply base works

SDS-Max drill bit production in China is concentrated in two regions: Danyang (Jiangsu) and the Wenling/Linhai corridor (Zhejiang). The important distinction for importers is that SDS-Max drill bits are not simply scaled-up SDS-Plus bits. The shank system operates at 5–20J of impact energy — Hilti and Bosch SDS-Max hammers run at 8–12J continuously under load. Tips, brazing bonds, and steel bodies all have to be engineered for that energy class. A factory that does SDS-Plus well but has no real SDS-Max infrastructure is a Tier-C risk at SDS-Max energy levels.

Three tiers describe the SDS-Max supply base honestly:

  • Tier A — Integrated manufacturers: Factories with in-house carbide pressing, proprietary heat treatment, and full cylindrical grinding lines. These factories supply Hilti, Bosch, and Makita OEM programs. MOQ is high (often 2,000–5,000 pcs per diameter), lead times are longer, and they are selective about new buyers. Most do not sell directly through Alibaba.
  • Tier B — Serious export factories: Factories that source certified carbide from reputable Chinese carbide mills, run dedicated vacuum brazing lines, and maintain documented QC. This is the right tier for importers and distributors seeking a long-term supply relationship. Price is higher than Tier C; quality is categorically different.
  • Tier C — Assembly operations: Operations that purchase pre-ground steel bodies and cheap carbide tips, braze in simple atmosphere furnaces, and do minimal QC. High variation batch to batch. These are the factories behind most field complaints importers encounter after chasing the lowest FOB price.

What separates a quality SDS-Max bit from a cheap one

Four factors determine whether an SDS-Max bit survives its first job site. Each is something you can verify before committing to volume.

Carbide source

The carbide tip is where almost every SDS-Max failure starts. Tier-B factories use carbide from reputable, tier-1 Chinese carbide mills. These mills control grain size and cobalt content to consistent standards. The practical grades for SDS-Max are YG8C (standard concrete) and YG11C (reinforced concrete and the heavy-duty, high-energy class).

Tier-C factories source from anonymous small producers in Hunan or Jiangxi. Grain size inconsistency is the core problem — oversized grains create stress concentrators that cause tip chipping on first rebar contact. The bits look identical at goods receipt and fail within 10 holes.

The verification is simple: ask for the carbide mill name and the mill's grade certificate for the specific batch. A serious factory has this document on file. A factory that cannot name their mill is telling you everything you need to know.

Brazing method

The bond between carbide tip and steel body must survive repeated 5–20J impacts. Two brazing methods are in common use in China, and they are not equivalent at SDS-Max energy levels:

  • Vacuum brazing (真空钎焊): No oxidation, consistent silver-alloy filler penetration, bond strength reliably above 300 MPa. This is the required method for tips that will survive SDS-Max service. It requires a capital-intensive vacuum furnace — not every factory has one.
  • High-frequency induction brazing: Fast and low-cost. Bond strength is inconsistent because dwell time and filler flow are harder to control than in a furnace. Not recommended for SDS-Max above 30mm.

Ask to see brazing process photos and pull-test data. Target minimum: 250 MPa shear bond strength. A factory with vacuum brazing will show you the equipment and share test data without hesitation.

Tip geometry

SDS-Max bits above 22mm require a 4-cutter cross tip (full carbide cross configuration) to distribute impact load and maintain drilling geometry under repeated blows. A 2-cutter tip is adequate for 14–20mm in standard concrete, but above 22mm in reinforced concrete it will wear asymmetrically within the first 15–20 holes.

Rebar-capable tips are a separate specification. A standard 4-cutter cross tip will survive incidental rebar contact. A rebar-rated tip (solid carbide cross, higher toughness grade) is designed for through-rebar drilling in post-tensioned slabs. Ask specifically — many Tier-C factories offer only the standard 4-cutter and will describe it as rebar-capable, which it is not in sustained use.

Heat treatment of the steel body

The SDS-Max shank takes the full impact load before transmitting it to the tip. Steel body failure — shank cracking, flute fracture, or shank deformation — is less common than tip failure but more dangerous. SDS-Max bits typically use 40Cr or 45# steel. Proper heat treatment targets HRC 35–45 at the shank for hardness, with a softer core (HRC 25–30) for toughness. Over-hardened shanks become brittle and crack under repeated high-energy impact.

Ask for a hardness test report with shank and core measurements — not just a spec sheet note that says "heat treated." A factory doing this properly tests every production batch, not just samples.

SDS-Max is the heavy-duty end of the rotary-hammer category — Ø12-45mm bits for reinforced-concrete structural drilling and demolition. These are the accessory programs that set the reference at this energy class.

What to ask before you place a PO

Seven questions that separate serious factories from assembly operations. Ask all of them before committing to volume.

  1. What carbide mill supplies your tips? Request the grade certificate for the specific carbide grade used in your target diameter range. A factory sourcing from a reputable tier-1 Chinese carbide mill can provide this immediately. A factory that deflects or gives you a generic answer should not make your shortlist.
  2. What is your brazing method for SDS-Max above 30mm? Request pull-test data. Target: minimum 250 MPa shear bond strength. Vacuum brazing should be standard for any bit above 22mm at SDS-Max energy levels. If a large-diameter SDS-Max bit is not vacuum-brazed, that is a red flag.
  3. What steel grade is the shank body? What is post-heat-treatment hardness at the shank? The answer should specify 40Cr or 45# steel, and hardness measurements should show HRC 35–45 at the shank with a softer core. A vague answer like "special alloy steel, heat treated" is not sufficient.
  4. Do you have CE marking? Request the Declaration of Conformity (DoC). Factories exporting to EU regularly should have this document ready. If they have to prepare it from scratch for your inquiry, they are not EU-regular suppliers regardless of what their Alibaba listing says.
  5. What is your AQL sampling standard for outgoing inspection? A factory with a real QC system can tell you: sample size, AQL level (typically AQL 2.5 for critical dimensions), and what happens to a batch that fails. A factory that describes outgoing inspection as "we check everything" is describing a visual spot-check, not a documented QC system.
  6. What is your runout inspection method? SDS-Max bits above 30mm should hold total indicated runout (TIR) below 1.5mm measured on a V-block with a dial indicator (百分表). Ask whether runout is checked per-batch or per-piece, and request the measurement setup photo. Factories that skip this step produce bits that vibrate under sustained load, accelerating tip wear and operator fatigue.
  7. Can you provide a sample run of 5–10 pcs per diameter before volume order? Any serious Tier-B factory will agree to this. A factory that pressures you to place a trial order of 500+ pieces before sampling is protecting margins, not building a relationship.
